Its worth remembering for that phil generally gets a week or two per month of motel stays out of his tugboat.

Ethical consumption under capitalism is impossible and so ridiculed in far left circles, it's nice i guess but certainly not something to brag about doing, you'd get mocked as a smug liberal. It's coffee hipsters can feel better about buying because the workers are treated better, it's supposedly more environmentally sound, etc. How true this is depends on the certifying authority and whether it's trustworthy. It generally but not always costs significantly more, but the quality of such products is also usually pretty well-regarded. Coffee, tea, and other commodities have this.

Considering the whole point of it is workers being treated better, Phil has utterly missed the point if he goes into a place demanding Fair Trade while treating the employees like shit. Shitty hipsters paying extra for stuff like this while treating the people behind the counter like that is why people hate hipsters.
