Italian and Spanish are pretty damn similar. Like, some Spanish speakers can understand Italian if they speak slow and clearly enough. I wouldn't be surprised if a Spanish looking person did text him Italian and he didn't notice.

The same can go for Portuguese. There's a degree of mutual intelligibility among many of the Romance languages, even though they aren't written exactly the same.
