Also canned fish like herring and mackerel is kind of pricy for someone so broke. Tuna or salmon (I'm assuming Portland prices are similar to my area) are much cheaper.
plus salmon and tuna are pretty versatile... make a cheap casserole or fried fish cakes. Literally under a dollar per meal, oh wait, Phil cant/won't cook.

Anyways, it's literally Thanksgiving day, isn't this like the number one day for food banks? Shouldn't any poor person be able to find a shit ton of food if they just take the time to go out and literally be handed food for free?

To be fair that's not exactly the case, Mackerel are lesser members of the Tuna family and are one of the most (if not the most) common blue water species out there it also helps they are suicidal little bastards and will take a polished hook readily, hell the jigging boats used to catch them are some of the most automated boats on the ocean and some of the most productive in any fishing fleet. What does bump up the cost is what it's mixed with in the tin, Mackerel while abundant don't lend themselfs to traditional methods preservation like salting, smoking or drying (it can be done but it's tricky an takes longer than other more readily available species such as most things in the Cod family), and can also take on a bit off a odd flavors so it has to be mixed with other things to make it more palatable and that's what bumps up the cost, that's why fresh or frozen is cheeper than what you get for the same amount per tin.

Yes, googling "thanksgiving homeless portland" shows several results for multiple shelters offer free meals in Portland and the surrounding areas (such as beaverton). One seemed to even offer delivery to shut ins.
@Ravenor I live semi near phil, just across the border and mackerel is way more expensive here. Sometimes it's cheaper in Asian markets though. Just saying it might be a local thing. Sucks cause mackerel is my jam.
