Cross bows in the us don't require a background check or anything else to own. You can't hunt with them unless you're over a certain age or handicapped, at least in my neck of the woods.

In Oregon, a crossbow is treated much the same way a firearm is treated* and him brandishing it or firing it off within the city limits will get his ass canned just like him brandishing or shooting off a firearm would.

*Except when it comes to hunting. I think we're the only state that doesn't allow people to use a crossbow for hunting or have a crossbow season.
