I'm skeptical Chris is exerting any kind of power over Barb. This isn't the first time she's played up the broken old lady act for sympathy.

Most likely Chris just had an "idea" to make some money and asked Barb to serve as a face because he thinks other people care about his horrible mother. That's why it's so obvious she's reading a script. The pauses are probably because Chris has atrocious handwriting.
