Apparently she's not actually on the ballot yet and needs to hire people to help collect even a thousand signatures.

Wouldn't it generally be considered shameful to admit you had to pay people to collect signatures for you? What serious politician couldn't organise a dozen volunteers every weekend to collect signatures at targeted locations? What the hell is the point of getting on the ballot when your outreach has been such a spectacular failure that you can't even find a few hundred solid supporters in the district?

I saved all my money I worked 80 hours a week to buy a Porsche so I’m good with money.

Oh btw I need money to pay people to get signatures because I’m that appalling and disgusting of a person no one in hell would do it for free.

Doesn't matter if he gets on the ballot or not. If he somehow does get on the ballot, I have no doubts that there are far more competent (Relatively speaking) candidates in that district, who will crush Johnny Boy like an ant.

The incumbent, Stephen Lynch, has over $12 million in reserve and near universal support from the major forces in the district.

John has $82 and has pissed off almost every political figure he's spoken with in the party. To say that he's fortunate no one has taken him seriously is an understatement. This is just a ploy from him and Frank to get some more play money before the campaign ends.

That email is an embarrassment. First of all, admitting that you have to hire "short term employees" to get your signatures, when anyone who might give money should know that volunteers should be doing that and questioning why Wu is wasting money on this. And then it randomly switches to "I'm too busy to fundraise." In a fundraising email. No sweetheart that's what politicians do. They fundraise.

It's fundraising email about financial incompetence that says she's too busy to fundraise. Wow where do I sign up to help?

So, instead of asking for 100 people to get 10 signatures each, he's begging for dollars so he can pay Natalie O'Brien's baby to get signatures

You know, the bit about 10 people donating $100 is perhaps the most self-aware thing I've seen out of the campaign. John's obviously aware that his support is a millimeter wide and a mile deep. (EDIT: and I should clarify that we're measuring "depth" in e-beggar terms here, not politician terms. In politician terms his support is a rounding error.)
He's probably even got 10 specific names in mind, but tossed that mail out there just on the off-chance someone else bites.

It's also a standard trick that she manages to get all wrong. It's supposed to be a strategy to let people know that it's okay to give small amounts, because lots of people giving a little is just the same in the end as a few people giving a lot. $100 isn't a small amount. It should be "If 40 people give $20 each, we'll have what we need." So she copied a strategy that someone probably told her, but still fucked it up.

And if she had 10 specific people in mind she should have called them directly. I know that she went to a training about how to be a politician where they teach you how to do that effectively.

You'd be surprised how common it is to pay, whether it is for "grass roots" initiatives to local, state and candidates beyond. It's incredibly common.
