The tl;dr is some shitty indie gamedev was fucking a bunch of guys and a Kotaku journalist. This was dealt with not only with a whole wave of coordinated articles calling gamers dead, but numerous websites trying to censor discussion of this including 4chan. The end result is that flamewars boiled over to any site that didn't ban discussion of this, mainly Twitter, 8chan, this site, and a few other sites. To make matters worse, nerds had been pissed off about both shitty video games and hobbies being taken over by dangerhairs looking for another place to turn into a woke political media (see Mass Effect 3's ending, Gone Home being shilled, the Kane and Lynch GameSpot scandal, etc.). After a year or so this died down, the people involved on both sides moved onto generic politics using the fame they gained, and shitty games continued to come out.
Online the main effects were that a few internet nobodies used this to launch their career, a lot of 4chan users left for 8chan (especially on /v/ and /pol/), and that there were a shitton of hilarious flamewars on Twitter. The biggest effect GamerGate had on most people was that it helped fuel the idea of a Twitter blocklist, dividing people between those for and against GamerGate online. Nowadays if you make a new Twitter account it won't be long before you find yourself blocked by people you've never even known about. This idea would later influence later "federated" social networks that allowed instances to block each other leading to the fragmented mess the fediverse is. Also professional victims and troons bitch about how bad gamers are and shit on them, as they run to the local GameStop to pick up the new Smash Bros game for $60.
To journalists/the media/social media titans however GamerGate was the first real sign they were losing their influence on the public. Two years after GamerGate, Donald Trump would win and Brexit would pass. For years they had been going on about how they were on the right side of history and that anyone who opposed them was a backwards ass redneck religious nutcase bigot. When Donald Trump won, the seething was extreme and they all declared "this will never happen again".

For Wu, GamerGate may as well be her own Vietnam even though in the end, it managed to catapult her to some fame beyond "developer of a single video game." Bringing up GamerGate five years later would be exceptional except that's beaten by saying the lesson of it is that the "status quo" won't help. Because somehow, tards fighting over vidya is a build up to people like Trump and incidents like Brexit. Nothing can top that such as people thinking the FBI doc was some proof of terrorism or some pro-GG journo screeching about lack of boob sliders means the SJWs are knee deep in all of the video games.
While GamerGate itself hadn't really done much beyond bringing some archive tools to light and having some journos and anti-GG spergs bring it up like it's the worst thing to happen, people like Milo were able to make a quick buck off of it, even if for some their fame managed to bite them in the ass at the end of it. None of this tism would of happened if places like 4Chan didn't try to censor it. Sure you might have some spergings over vidya and all but that would of just fizzled out to being just a few threads saying "
these journalist sound angry" or "Zoe Quinn sucked off five guys" rather than the tism we know of today.
