Personally, I think asking to be called "they" is akin to using a "Royal We", and anyone that does it has a mental illness that makes them think they're royalty. In which case, they need better meds.Whenever I hear somebody ask to be referred to as 'they/them' I immediately get the impression that such usage implies the person being spoken of is so distasteful to the speaker that they don't even want to confirm their gender.
