I just saw a commercial for this on TV while watching Criminal Minds. I checked out the site because I was intrigued by the commercial.

https://www.23andme.com/

It's basically a DNA testing site where you can learn about what genetic defects and possible illnesses you are carrying, etc etc. You buy a kit, use it, and send the kit back to them so they can test it for you. I think this could come in handy for people wanting to learn about their medical history and possible issues, but there's also a privacy concern. I thought this site and DNA testing in general would be a fun discussion.

I wouldn't do it. Where do those records end up? I ain't being turned down for health insurance by suprise one day because I *might* get lymphoma at 60.

I've gotten my and my mom's DNA analyzed by 23andme. My brother is in the process of getting his analyzed. This service is fun and informative if you like learning about your genetics and ancestry. For genealogy purposes I like it more than AncestryDNA from Ancestry.com.

I'll pass on it, although it does sound like fun.

I did get a gift subscription to ancestry.com last year, though, and I've loved the hell out of that. It turns out that I had a lot more Latoya Sioux in my family than I originally thought.

Also, lots of military men who came to untimely deaths, either from KIA, accidents, or drunken debauchery (and sometimes all three). One of my uncles died by being hit by a train!

Here's my ancestry composition. I've replaced my full name with my username here to prevent JERKS from getting my dox. My mom is Chinese and my dad is a Euromutt, so this ancestry composition came as no surprise to me.

This company just wants to skirt the Sixth Day law. Don't be surprised if you return home one day to find a clone that has replaced you. Get what you can and run; they'll chase you to the ends of the earth to break you dead.

I understand this, if my employer wanted to test my DNA I'd be like no thanks, but this is a private company so apparently they are not supposed to share this with anyone. I also guess you could anonymously test your DNA, they'd only need your real name if they're looking for family members. I would definitely ask them abouyt privacy before I submitted my DNA.

The thing with 23andMe is that you can opt out of sharing your DNA, for either use in their DNA research and/or the relative finder. Here's a list of my mom's closest related relatives (the Chinese ones). Notice how all these people aren't sharing their names. They probably only signed up for 23andMe for health testing and not for genealogy research.

Awesome, thanks for clarifying that.

Curious, since some of my ancestry is pretty murky, a lot of my relatives lived in areas where documentation was...sparse.

Kind of curious (although I'll probably end up using the information to decide whether I should procreate or not)

23andMe calculates health risks by identifying certain genetic markers found in individuals inflicted with these conditions. The percentages given in the health report are the probabilities that you will get those respective conditions based on your genotype. While using 23andMe is a good start to learn about your genetically inclined health risks, it's still not quite full-blown genetic counseling. Notice the disclaimer at the bottom of the screenshot. Also, the thing is that 23andMe's DNA analysis only gets more accurate when they have more users' DNA to analyze.

As for my own health risks, I already knew I was inclined toward Type 2 Diabetes since my mother has it, so that information didn't come as a devastating shock to me. However, results toward the terminal illnesses Alzheimer and Parkinson's diseases are locked until you read a disclaimer basically stating that the risks towards getting those are based on environmental and lifestyle choices, not just genetics.

I'm going to open my own genetic counseling centre called "Six Degrees of Christian Chandler". Two categories: shared attributes and relation distance. The more users in the database, the more accurate finding out how close you are related to Chris will be. 1 to 3 degrees will be those who share genetic history with Chris. 4 to 6 degrees will be those who share genetic attributes with him.

Keeping a fresh specimen from Chris on hand at all times should prove relatively simple. I'll hire collectors from local McDonald's restaurants to obtain hair and skin samples from him.

I've also been curious about what results Chris would get if he submitted his saliva to 23andMe. What diseases from Borb would he have? Would his DNA help explain why he's so mentally unstable? Is he actually Cheerokian as he claims? Are any of us *gasp* distantly related to Chris?

But based on the facts that he's super paranoid of everyone now, barely checks his mail for presents such as an expensive 23andMe testing kit,and wouldn't even care about such an intellectual pursuit, I know that this is just a pipe dream, just like a CWC-themed Hoarders episode. :(

What if we could determine what causes his dirty, crapped briefs? Discuss.

I thought we weren't supposed to discuss Chris's gross bodily functions in these forums?? And this thread is of the General forum, not the Chris forum, so we discuss everything except Chris.
