Texas presumably because of the Republic of Texas and it’s legacy that has since made Tejanos very distinct from even regions in Mexico and Hispanics elsewhere in the country (Hispanics in Texas tend to have a lot of German and Czech ancestry and those cultures are more pronounced on the regional culture). In Aztec mythology Aztlan was their original homeland and they migrated south to what’s now Central Mexico presumably because Athabaskan people’s like Navajo and Apache were migrating into the region and kicked them out. Because their language is connected to the Ute of Utah, New Mexico, and Colorado this makes some sense. However they’re also acting like they are all the legacy of the Aztecs for that reason when I’m fact the Aztec Nahua peoples weren’t even the largest Indigenous group in Mexico. That distinction goes to the Mixtec-Zapotec people. The Tarascans were also pretty large at one time, but kind of received special treatment for the Spanish for being allies against the Aztecs and Tarascan women were renowned for their beauty by Spanish settlers because they never did all the bizarre body modifications (tattoos, piercing, cranial deformation - all were forbidden in the Tarascan religion) others did and so a lot of them who even identify with the culture have some European ancestry, Mayans also outnumbered the Aztecs. Most Northern Mexicans with indigenous ancestry come from Yaqui or Cohuilatecan stock. Now why is any of this important? Because the Aztecs fucking hated all of these people, were almost perpetually at war with them, and often sacrificed them after battles. The legacy they’re trying to claim with Aztlan is almost identical to the Nazi German concept of Lebensraum when framed this way.


I’ve known a ton of Chicanos and Tejanos in my lifetime and it’s actually kind of funny how they don’t like people from Mexico usually and identify with their own communities or other white people. Hell the North and South Chicanos don’t even really get along.

That’s the whole thing, this is fiction but being the History sperg I am I like to analyze stuff like this because it amuses me. In trying to be indigenous he’s actually erasing them. Most Natives I know are either content with the current system or grumble a bit about poverty on the Res but admit that it’s better than nothing (or outright say it’s their own communities fault). Really worked out great in Ecuador, Bolivia, and Venezuela where now Natives are among the poorest citizens even if in Bolivia the regime is officially pro-Indigenous, that’s mostly for the Aymara, not other groups.!

I like to think he’s just going to give the Chinese Florida and call it a day to try to pay off the massive debt that this plan would cause, but even they don’t want it so it exists in this perpetual state of lawless limbo run by bikers, but knowing his headcanon it’s probably going to be run by Cubans.

I love alternate history, this is one of the funnier scenarios.

Even Athabaskan people don’t get along among their own tribes, sometime to this day. The Apache say the Navajo sold out to the US, and Navajo say the Apache refused to become civilized. Neither group gives a damn about their relatives still living in Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and Russia. Algonguins still has a confederation that voluntarily divided during the Civil War over the issue of Self Governance vs. Central Governance. Seminoles from Florida dislike Seminoles from Oklahoma hate Seminoles from Texas. When you take into account how complex tribal politics are, it’s not like Techmseh and his United Native Federation as much as I’m sure these people think it would be that easy. Nowadays all the prejudices I mentioned have died down quite a bit but they still see themselves and their tribe as a distinct group. There was never a great ethnogenesis among the various people’s, often in the same linguistic or cultural group the way there was in China among the Han which aren’t one group, but had this mindset of collective culture that Natives never really developed.
