Because- and this explains both parts of it- he's ashamed of who he is. He's filled with so much subconscious self-loathing that he can't find pride in anything true about himself, and turns to making things up about himself to try and garner friends and sympathy. This also explains part of why he turned his back on Kory, Dusty, and the rest of us: if we liked something about the real him, we must be lying, if we critiqued a flaw, we were showing we really hated him, and if we called him out on his bullshit, we were destroying his "one true chance" at being accepted.
