Considering that this is Chris we're talking about, I'm not sure if we should take him at his word regarding the metal from which the piercing was made. It might be that Chris is just exaggerating/being mistaken and that the piercing is merely gold-colored rather than actually made of gold. Than again I wouldn't be surprised if Chris were to actually spend money on an actual gold piercing while incuring more and more debts.
Seeing all the hearts emoticons and the general tone of the SMS, it seems as if Chris is giving you the Megan/Wallflower treatment and is hoping that your will upgrade you relationship status with him.

I would like to think that the previous piercing getting infected would scare him. Obviously not. Also, I can only imagine how painful that repiercing is going to be. If the skin is still infected, it's going to hurt like a bitch.

Gold is not very allergenic, so some people choose it for piercings over cheaper stainless steel. Titanium is even less allergenic, though.

So........... Chris is still texting Renee. I can't fucking believe that he got himself re-pierced. You'd think that last little scare would have taught him something.
Also, the new piercing jewelry is apparently gold, so I'm guessing that it was considerably more expensive.
Given this latest development, I'm tempted to break my new "prime directive" and intervene. Failing that, I may try and get a hold of Catherine (if she's still in the picture) and see if she can talk some sense into him.
