This is breaking news so we don't even know anything about the causes as of yet. Apparently there was only one gunman and he had either a rifle or a shotgun.

God, why do these things happen so much in America?
I've been thinking recently that part of the problem may be that we in particular have a heavy obsession with individualism, to the point of excluding other concerns. Specifically, we are told from birth about the "American Dream" fallacy - that anyone can grow from rags to riches, guaranteed. People take it to heart that they are owed greatness. Not just material greatness, but especially greatness in terms of being the center of things, our feelings and wishes being more important than those of the npc's around us.

I believe people are going to be selfish scumbags anywhere in the world, provided they're given the excuse to. I don't know how things like success and achievement are portrayed in other first world nations, but it's probably a bit different, yes?

I just asked Alec about this, and I was thinking: Do they actually happen more often in America?

I would say this probably doesn't happen more often in America, per capita, to a substantial extent.
I totally agree. We get a lot of school shootings and what not and have more crime and more prisons but people also ignore that the USA is huge.

For example, I just drove 17 hours north and didn't even remotely make it across the country and that's the short way to drive across the USA. It's more accurate to think of this country as being 50 little countries that happen to be under one flag.

I'm bracing myself for another Pro-gun/Anti-gun media wankfest.

I personally want to know what was going through the shooter's mind when they were doing this. What compels someone to do something like this? What were they hoping to achieve by firing weapons on innocent people on a college campus?

Oh god, the comments. We have the "erhmrghd, ban guns" crowd duking it out with the "Herpaderp 'Murica n Gunz" crowd.
I'm sad and angry now.

I would say for a first world nation is has a high population and a lot of gun crimes. Less wealthy countries I suspect are a lot more violent but aren't covered as closely.

You can ban guns but people will still find ways to kill people.
Indeed. Even if one were to ban guns, there is still a market for it. People will use the black market. There is also this I just have to share:

People can make their guns and besides, even if guns were banned and the crime rate for them did decrease, there will be other homicide rates that increase.
