BERLIN -- Six people have been killed and several were injured in a shooting in the southwestern German town of Rot am See, police said Friday.

A suspect was arrested shortly after the shooting, which took place at 12:45 p.m. (1145 GMT) Friday near the town's train station, police said. They said no other suspects are believed to be at large.


“According to my information, there were six dead and several injured,” Aalen police spokesman Rudolf Biehlmaier told German broadcaster n-tv.

“We are working on the assumption that this was a single attacker,” he said.

Biehlmaier said the initial information suggested the suspect, a German citizen, and one or more of the victims knew each other.

Some of the victims belonged to the same family, he added.

In a statement, police said further information would be released at a news conference with prosecutors and local officials at 4:30 p.m. (1530 GMT.)

Rot am See is located about 170 kilometers (105 miles) northwest of Munich.

That article says three females were killed (aged 36, 56 and 62), and three males (36, 65, 69). Two of them were the perpetrator's mother and father. The rest were relatives too.

The shooter opened fire shortly after midday at the German Kaiser hotel in the southwestern town of Rot am See, Baden-Wuerttemberg, 105 miles northwest of Munich.

The 26-year-old gunman, who was been arrested, is understood to have gone on a slaughter spree following a family row.

After killing three men, aged 36, 65, and 69, and three women, aged 36, 56 and 62, he called police to alert them of the bloodshed.

The suspect also threatened two children, aged 12 and 14.

Police kept him on the phone while heavily armed cops were scrambled to the scene and detained him shortly before 1pm.

The gunman, who has not yet been named, was a member of a shooting club and had a licence to carry a firearm.

Police swoop in on the area in the southwestern German town of Rot am See, Baden-Wuerttemberg, where six are believed to have been shot dead.

Forensic teams in southwest Germany were also seen entering the bar after the shooter killed six believed to be family members.

Two people were also confirmed injured by police, who downgraded the number of non-fatal casualties from 'several'.

Police found the six dead bodies sprawled in and behind the hotel.

Spokesman Rudolf Biehlmaier said: 'According to my information, there were six dead and several injured.

'We are working on the assumption that this was a single attacker. In any case, we have no information on further suspects.'"

The man fired at his relatives with a semi-automatic handgun in the south western German town of Rot am See just after 12.30pm local time, police said.

The man, aged 26, was captured after calling police himself following the horror. A police statement revealed he made an emergency call to the command and control center of the Aalen police headquarters and said he had just shot several people.

He waited outside the Deutscher Kaiser inn, a sports pub reportedly run by his father and which is close to the train station, while police remained on the line until officers from the Crailsheim police station arrived at the scene at 1257pm."
