I don't know as much as i'd like about the religion, but isn't its policy to keep a blade hinting at a martial past, and a willingness to serve in the army, mostly the indian army. However despite all of that, the personal religious philosophy is as a people to be non violent? Like don't hurt anything almost to the level of the Jains?

They are stand up guys but your definitely wouldn't want to piss them given that people have been trying to screw with them for the last 400 years and in each case the Sikhs have managed to fight them off with a lot of epic last stands where the Sikhs were outnumbered 900,000 to 1 and all died but their deaths proved to be a pyrrhic victory of the end for whichever bunch of bastards were trying to exterminate Sikhs. The whole of Sikh history is basically the movie '300' with the Sikhs in the role of the Spartans.

This is just silly. Sikhs are a mostly endogenous ethnic subgroup that arose in the nothern part of the Indian subcontinent. They've engaged in considerably less intermarriage outside their tribe in the past few centuries than many similar groups such as Jews have.

It's called Langar, and it is a free vegetarian meal prepared in the temple kitchen and given to anyone and everyone, regardless of religion, caste, or ethnicity. It is specifically vegetarian so that everyone can join in even if they have religious food prohibitions.

I knew a guy who had a rough patch in his life and ended up homeless. A local sikh gas station owner found him camping out back, and instead of having the cops run him in for trespassing, he invited him to come to the temple for the langar. He not only got a good warm meal, a member of the congregation offered him a part time job sweeping and cleaning up at his store. From there he was able to put his life back together and while he didn't convert, he donates food and attends Langar to help prepare the food for others, and has been able to help out other people in a bad spot.
