the main thing Sikhs do is to feed hungry people. When a mass shooter shot people at a sikh temple (he thought they were muslims) there was a fair amount of press about what they are and what they do, seemed like they did much more charity than the majority of religions.

Sikhs are really cool and I love them.

Which is why I want them to rake fatty over the coals for being horrid to them for years.

Every reference on Sikhism I've read says Sikh's aren't supposed to cut/shave hair anywhere on their body. So is the deal w/the Sikh waxing salons that they can only service non-sikhs? If a Sikh walked into one, wouldn't they be ethically obligated to refuse service to their own?

Dunno. I suppose like any religion there's levels of adherence, like most the sikh run convienence stores around here are headed by an old guy with full beard and turban, but his younger male relatives behind the counter are often shaven and wear western haircuts. I can only tell they're sikh from the steel (?) bracelet.

As for waxing, its probably an easy way to make money off the non sikhs who are apparently fascinated with landing strips.

I have a Sikh friend (philatelic)...stills lives in Sikhland...A dentist, in an arranged marriage...We chat of things other than philatelic....life in general & such...I've never known him to be anything but a stand up guy, which applies to other Sikhs I've known...Hindi's on the other hand? I've known many to be scammers.

This is the most Indian post I've ever read

If I recall correctly I don't think the boys have nearly the same required commitments as the men. They don't wear the full turbans for example, and I don't think they have to grow a full beard until they marry. Maybe someone can correct me if I'm off base here.

The Sikhs own a bunch of stuff where I live, which is a small working class BC town. From what I can tell they have no problem fitting in with the community for the most part. The kids are generally respectful (except for one asshole who stinks up the gym with cologne and never gets off his phone), the elders are always friendly and wave me to when I'm walking the dog, and the customer service in their stores is typically above average.

I might have a different opinion if I lived in a place like Surrey or Burnaby where there's a much higher concentration, but here in the backwaters they appear to be solid people who tend to just go with the flow and not bother anyone. But in small towns word travels fast and you don't have the anonymity a large city provides, so there isn't as much opportunity to get away with shit that negatively affects the community.

Same here, it might be different in bigger cities but maybe not, decades ago when We were poor in the bay area, we had a sikh grocer who would offer us credit to get food in between paydays. I thought he was nuts, but we were grateful and always paid him back.

Agreed, some Sikhs own a few shops near me and they’re always incredibly polite and welcoming, far more than the customer service you get from the bored white teens working retail in neighbouring shops. Sikhs are just nice people, not sure why Yaniv has such a hatred of them. Maybe it’s because they’re industrious, generous and friendly, and he’s just a fat blanched potato in a dress who wastes public services and has no friends.

I'm pretty sure many Sikh women still get their legs etc waxed. Western beauty standards etc.

Similarly I'm sure some trendy young Sikh men get their beards trimmed, but might stick to the long hair under a turban.

Storytime: I have quite a few Sikh family friends. One of them is a guy, and he really wanted to have long hair, but his dad, who isn't very religious and does not wear a turban, was against it as he wanted his son to look more modern. Then the son went and said "but in our religion we aren't supposed to cut hair anyways, so why can't I grow it out?

It really depends, a lot of more sikhs do cut their hair, or don't. It's a choice for sure.

There are two 'levels' in Sikhism, the ones who adhere to/belong to the "Khalsa" are the ones who are supposed to adhere to the 'five K's laid out by the last Guru of Sikhism who created the Khalsa order to be the defenders of Sikhism and the undertrod in general. The five K's being #1 uncut hair on head or body, as it would be marring God's perfect work. The turban is just the way chosen to keep that long hair tidy. As I understand it, a Khalsa-orthodox Sikh could have a long ponytail if they wanted to. Anyway the other 4 Ks are #2 a comb, #3 a steel bracelet, #4 special underwear, and #5 the blade or kirpan, which can range in size from a knife to a shortsword and which is only to be drawn and/or used in the defense of self, family or the oppressed.

The 'regular' Sikh believers are not held to this standard, just the general tenants of their faith which is generally 'don't be an asshole, help others whenever you can, and be spiritual and cultivate your faith in/understanding of God', though an actual Sikh could give a much better explanation.
