What are you guys’ favorite 80’s horror movies? Least favorites? I think my all-time favorite is probably Evil Dead 2. It just has the perfect blend of genuinely creepy moments as well as stuff that made me laugh out loud.
Another one I really like is Leviathan. Ever since I was little, I’ve always been really fascinated by the ocean and its inhabitants, so a monster movie that takes place underwater is right up my alley. It helps that the effects are pretty good (I think they were done by Stan Winston). There were a few other underwater monster movies made at that time (1989-1990), likely because people heard James Cameron was making an underwater movie. None of the others are anything special, but I kind of enjoyed The Rift (directed by Juan Piquer Simón!) as well as some aspects of Deepstar Six.
I also really enjoyed the anime film Wicked City. It was directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, so you should know what you’re getting into if you’re familiar with his work.
One movie that I wasn’t too keen on is Halloween 2, to be honest. It just feels like a rehash of the first one but with the level of violence unnecessarily increased, probably to appeal to changing standards of horror movies in the wake of Friday the 13th. I like gory movies but Halloween is all about subtlety, so having more graphic violence in one of those movies just doesn’t feel right.
