80’s Horror Movies - A thread for all kinds of horror movies from the 1980’s, ranging from beloved classics like A Nightmare On Elm Street to shitty Z-grade trash like Boardinghouse.

What are you guys’ favorite 80’s horror movies? Least favorites? I think my all-time favorite is probably Evil Dead 2. It just has the perfect blend of genuinely creepy moments as well as stuff that made me laugh out loud.

Another one I really like is Leviathan. Ever since I was little, I’ve always been really fascinated by the ocean and its inhabitants, so a monster movie that takes place underwater is right up my alley. It helps that the effects are pretty good (I think they were done by Stan Winston). There were a few other underwater monster movies made at that time (1989-1990), likely because people heard James Cameron was making an underwater movie. None of the others are anything special, but I kind of enjoyed The Rift (directed by Juan Piquer Simón!) as well as some aspects of Deepstar Six.

I also really enjoyed the anime film Wicked City. It was directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, so you should know what you’re getting into if you’re familiar with his work.

One movie that I wasn’t too keen on is Halloween 2, to be honest. It just feels like a rehash of the first one but with the level of violence unnecessarily increased, probably to appeal to changing standards of horror movies in the wake of Friday the 13th. I like gory movies but Halloween is all about subtlety, so having more graphic violence in one of those movies just doesn’t feel right.

Street Trash is the best movie ever made. Obligatory Fight me IRL, etc.

I actually haven’t seen that one, though I’ve been meaning to for a long time. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it from other horror fans. I love movies that go all the way when it comes to being gross or weird, so I have a feeling I’ll enjoy it if I ever get around to watching it.

Definitely. I think a movie about a blob going around devouring people needed graphic gore effects that weren’t possible and/or weren’t allowed when the original was made.
Well, that's true. I mean if you're being eaten alive it's going to be graphic! Which reminds me of Creepshow 2 which featured a killer blob in the Raft. It was based of the short story by Stephen King.

Is Creepshow 2 any good? I liked the first but haven’t seen the others. I’ve heard that 3 is terrible but I’ve heard pretty much nothing about the second one.

I’m a little mixed on this movie. I absolutely adore the music and the atmosphere, and Freudstein is creepy as hell, but there were some parts I didn’t like, mainly the dubbing (especially Bob. Good lord.), but it wasn’t a huge issue. As with any Fulci movie, the kills are pretty brutal, which seems to be a staple of Italian horror in general. Alright movie overall, but I felt it could have been a little better.

My friend and I discovered Creepshow 3 on the Pirate Bay way back out of the blue and out of curiosity watched it. It was terrible to say the least. You'll have more fun watching Tales from the Darkside if haven't seen that movie yet.

Now Creepshow 2 is a lot like the first Creepshow. Just 3 stories instead of 5 and it feels less campy but it does have the same horror comedy from the first. Just in smaller doses.

I enjoyed Darkside quite a bit. Good to hear about Creepshow 2, too. I think I’d actually prefer 3 stories over 5. It would allow the stories to be a bit longer I assume.

American Werewolf in London is one of my favorites of 80s horror.

There's something about the tone of that movie, it's very unique, it's a "horror comedy" except the "comedy" only serves to make the movie creepier, it's not comedy you really laugh at, it's more comedy that adds a viciously ironic air to the horror which only makes it all the more upsetting.

It's just such a mean movie, you know what I mean? And it manages to creep me out even as an adult in a way that few movies still do.

The movie in a nutshell is that shot during the transformations sequence where it cuts to a Mickey Mouse doll "observing" the situation, that just creeps me out so bad, like what the hell does it mean?

I must confess that I’ve never seen that movie. I feel bad because I know it’s one of the holy grails of 80’s horror. I’ve admittedly been far more into watching obscure stuff that I know little to nothing about. I’m sure I’ll get around to watching more of the big ones eventually.
