Activision-Blizzard has reportedly fired nearly 190 employees, 50 of which are from their esports division.

The new report (via Bloomberg, Sports Business Journal) notes the layoffs affect less than 2% of the company’s total workforce, or roughly 190 employees.

Staff that were based in the United States will reportedly receive a minimum of 90 days of severance and health benefits for up to a year. The severance package also includes a $200 gift card to the Battle.net store, which is Activision Blizzard’s online store.

Activision executive Tony Petitti noted the 50 esports layoffs were the result of the company refocusing their efforts on esports while the COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing. Petitti noted Activision Blizzard is looking to plan for a future where their esports look different and are “less dependent on live events.”

Petitti also noted the layoffs are also, naturally, due to new measures on cutting costs, shifting resources to other parts of the company. “In terms of timing, it’s a reaction to the realities of how the leagues are playing and what resources we need to allocate to best serve the league, owners, teams, and fans,” Petitti said.

This is the latest round of layoffs in the past several years, with nearly 800 employees fired back in March 2019. Despite this, Activision Blizzard remains optimistic for the future and is still expecting to hire thousands of new staff in 2021.

Yeah I might not have my job but at least I have a 19$ Fortnite Card 200$ Battle.net Card

Imagine getting laid off and receiving a company gift voucher from the company they originally laid you off.

Don't forget to buy our games, here's a head start!

I want to rag on Blizzard, but I'm pretty sure that's more than what the company I work for would give me if I got laid off, and I'm in a senior position. So... hey, that buys you what? A year's worth of World of Warcraft subscriptions? Maybe they can save up for Overwatch 2.

Maybe a couple Call of Duties and their respective monetizations.

Saw this yesterday.

The worst part is like a month or two ago Blizzard talked about hiring like 3000 more people.

Also remember, the 2019 layoff of 900 people was the exact same call that they announced record profits. Yes, sometimes you can have profits and get rid of a non-profitable section, but it still looks bad that you don't at least attempt to relocate some people.

Bonus video about how little Blizzard pays people.

I don't think the issue is as much the layoffs as with Bobby's payout. The OWL fucking failed miserably and Blizzard has made all efforts to micromanage the fun out of their game in the name of ESPORTS, so that comboing with the pandemic should be a no-brainer that they'd lay off esports staff.

It's just that Bobby taking yet another massive bonus at the same time suggests that he's fully aware the company can continue to shit out absolutely mediocre products and people will still gobble them up. Especially since that's a bit of a snapshot from the Shadowlands high: the massive turnover rate in subs isn't going to be reflected yet in the Actiblizz stocks. It won't be a huge hit because it's just one game, but WoW is still their cashcow. There's going to be a big dip between this shadowlands exodus (game gets boring really fast) and the TBC beta announcement.

To be fair it was their esports divison and they have made some pant on head retarded decisons. I dont think they have made money since sc2 either. Comp Overwatch is a joke, Sc2 is dead, heroes is dead. Heartstone has gotten smaller esports wise for years. The only esports that saw any growth on blizzard ironcaly enough was wow PVP.

Keep an eye on Jim Sterling's YouTube Channel. I'm sure he'll make a video on it considering he just loves to foam at the mouth regarding Blizzard/Activision and Bobby Kotick in general

If Jimbo don't lose his channel first by DMCA abuse: a lolcow developer is having a chimpout about his games being thrashed in the past by Sterling and others and have declared war to them :stress:
