Act Raiser was (and still is) one of my favourite ever SNES games and I really want to add it to my SNES collection because I foolishly traded it many years ago. It's possibly about 18 years since I last played it and it seems to be quite expensive to buy on PAL and US NTSC formats (even as cart only). The Japanese version is way cheaper by comparison and there's a few available to me just now at a decent price but I really can't remember how much of it is text based? As I have no knowledge of the Japanese language would it be pointless to buy the Japanese cart? Any advice would be really appreciated guys. Thanks in advance...

I don't know how much text there is in the game (never having played it) but FWIW: to play Japanese carts in a SNES you have to remove the circuit board from the cartridge shell. My SNES is a Super Famicom that doesn't accept the U.S. (etc.) carts, and the you can't plug a Super Famicom cart into a SNES; the cartridge has a different form factor. There are two ways to get around this: 1) with a special tool that'll deal with the weird-ass screw heads Nintendo used (good luck finding one), or 2) carefully break the circuit board out of the cart. Either way, the end result is a bare circuit board. It goes in your SNES with the chip side facing away from you. When you look at the console you see the solder side of the board. It'll work fine; the systems are completely compatible.

It sounds horrible, but it won't take you two minutes to break out the circuit board.

If you plug the board in backwards, it'll blow a fuse on the SNES motherboard. (Yes, I have done so.) It's an easy fix, but it's easier to avoid.

I bought myself a SNES screwdriver a while ago because Nintendo's hatred of people importing games not for their SNES they used to scaremonger some stuff about using adapters can blow a fuse inside your SNES. Both My PAL SNES and Universal Adapter are over 20 years old and I've never had bother with either.

Actraiser is a good game bro

Indeed but is the Japanese version playable if you don't know any Japanese?

I think it would be. Just remember to swing your sword in the platform stages and shoot the demons in the cherub stage. When the village folk reach a demon hole, the game will prompt you and the townies will say "Oh no, the demons are stealing our townsfolk, will you rescue them?"

And remember, houses are better than straw huts.

You know, as much as I enjoyed the first game I never really tried the sequel to it.
I should look for a rom of it online and see if it's as good as the original!

Yeah, the sequel pretty much dumped the whole town building in order to make it a pure platforming action game. I found it to be fun though, and the music was good as well. Really wondered what they were thinking when they made ActRaiser 2 without the town building.

I know you state it's for your collection, but it's available on virtual console if that's any help. Cracking game with a soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro, winning combination in my book.
