The dude who turned in Chelsea Manning is dead:

Lamo has been criticized by fellow hackers, such as those at the Hackers on Planet Earth conference in 2010, who called him a "snitch". Another commented to Lamo, following his speech during a panel discussion, saying: "From my perspective, I see what you have done as treason.

Lamo's role in the Manning case drew criticism from Glenn Greenwald of Salon Magazine. Greenwald suggested that Lamo lied to Manning by turning Manning in, and then lied after the fact to cover up the circumstances of Manning's confessions

Hacker Adrian Lamo has died at age 37, according to ZDNet and a Facebook post from his father. The circumstances of Lamo’s death are unknown, but a coroner in Sedgwick County, Kansas, reportedly confirmed the news.

Lamo was known in the early 2000s for hacking a number of company networks, including that of The New York Times Company. Sometimes dubbed the “homeless hacker” for his nomadic life, he pled guilty in 2004 to breaching the Times’ internal network and running up tens of thousands of dollars in search fees on its Lexis-Nexis account. Before that, he warned several other companies of security flaws, including WorldCom and Microsoft.

More recently, however, Lamo was known for alerting the Army after whistleblower Chelsea Manning confided in him about leaking classified material to WikiLeaks. Lamo said he acted out of a sense of “duty,” but later expressed some regret for the decision, although he stood by it in later interviews. “A bright mind and compassionate soul is gone,” wrote Lamo’s father on Facebook.

He didn't do that, though. He went out of his way to obtain a confidence and then snitched about it, while connected to Wikileaks itself, the very entity dumping the leaks. There's no way to interpret it other than egging on Manning to keep on, then pretending a sudden attack of "conscience" once he'd obtained cooperation.

My personal ethic is you do not obtain a confidence and then betray it. If I have a legal obligation to disclose, and you start wandering into that territory, I will tell you to shut the fuck up and stop talking because otherwise you're going to get yourself in trouble.

Every site, from Wired to The Guardian to others had some fairly visible agenda in reporting on this, so one site merged all the logs that ended up disclosed. Those are here:

Anyway, my view is that Lamo tried to insert himself into a controversy to whore for attention and ended up hated by almost everyone on the Internet, albeit for different reasons, and completely deservedly. He was a manipulative cunt who increased the damage Manning caused, then ratted out Manning after having basically encouraged the crimes to intensify, trying to use that to gain credibility with Wikileaks, too.

He was the worst sort of snitch, one who does it purely for personal advantage.

I'm glad he's dead.

I saw the post from Adrian's dad in the 2600 faceFace geoup and while I'm sympathetic toward his family, especially his dad, I'm not feeling terribly bad for Adrian.

The rumors seem to be suggesting he got hooked again on opiates and he overdosed.
His last social media posts were made on March 1st, and a neighbor found him saying he was dead for a while.

Of course, none of this is confirmed, but given that I run in HOPE circles, I'd think what I'm hearing is good enough to pass on.
