So, after hours of aimless wandering on Youtube I stumbled upon this goldmine of autism that is African bootleg films. Without further ado let's see some examples ?

(fun starts at 0:30 unless you want to see 30 seconds of a dude walking)

Dude summons a demon is teleported to the countryside, stops to take a shit and gets beaten up by a possessed axe. Cue to the best Spiderman ever seen

Fight between Spiderman and possesd dude who gets incinerated because in this universe Spiderman can toss fireballs apparently

This one I don't even know...

And this is just the tip of the iceberg! I'm sure there are even more gems waiting to be discovered in some obscure Ugandan site

Sorry for posting a fucking Vice video but it sums it up pretty good. There's a handful of Africans doing these action flicks that resemble the age of Grindhouse movies but with absolutely no budget whatsoever. I find it adorable af.

Anyone who doesn't appreciate African bootleg movies is part of the TIGER MAFIA!!!

Seriously though, I can't hate these movies. Stuff like Who Killed Captain Alex was edited on a computer with about as much processing power as a toaster and a budget which I probably could finance with a single paycheck. They have more joy crammed into them than 99% of all the Hollywood blockbusters that spend millions of dollars to just remove a moustache off of an actor's face.

Jesus the quotes!

Spot on, the joy of shit like Captain Alex is something we can't quite access in our own media on account of cycnicism. There's a Franz Mesmer line - "For they have drained the cup of sensuality to its very dregs." That's us. We're oversaturated, there's no wonder or whimsy left and I think that's what people have been after in choosing to champion indy films & games. When we first see something like Captain Alex, our instinct is often to peg that joy as naiveté, when it's actually a conscious decision on the part of the creator.

There's also something pleasantly detached about it all. It's self aware, but not too much.

Did we ever figure out who killed Captain Alex?
IIRC they kinda forgot about it somewhere along the way.

Did you ever feel like the pacing and structure of this film was uniquely non western? If we look at western film and music, there's usually a beginning, middle and end. Music is where this really shines thru - we have 3 act operas, musicals, sonatas, etc. African music, howevs, is different. It's circular and evolves over time while returning to certain themes along the way. Linear vs Non-linear, kind of like the structure of a pop single versus the structure of house music on a 12" vinyl. Sorta.

Captain Alex is the same way - we never tie up all the sub plots, we never answer the eponymous question, but there is a sense of progression and a periodic return to certain themes & tones throughout the entire film. What happened with the Cap'n doesn't matter all that much, so long as everyone's having a good time. The VJ, cracking jokes even at the expense of the characters in the film, says to me that "Captain Alex" is the result of a culture that places a higher value on the immediacy of lived experience than it does upon image, products and the other obsessions of the marketplace. This is a distinctly non American take on the uniquely American tradition of action cinema.
This film and its plot are a web of contradiction and impulsive design choices, and it shouldn't work, but it does. It's like those crazy machines the Orks build in 40K that ought to be falling apart but don't, held together by the raw faith & conviction of their creators.

After coming to this realization, I've decided that I feel differently about that old chestnut RE: black folks at the movies. It's partially due to a demonstrable difference in core values. Thank you, Captain Alex.
