This thread is for talking about any aircraft carriers.

Personally I love the USS Kitty Hawk. The last of its kind before it retired. A non-nuclear US Carrier.

Also I don’t like Ski-Ramp type carriers. It’s too gay, catapults are better and efficient.

I get the whole thing about the Ski Ramp design, but I dunno. But it would be interesting to see a Ski Ramp-Catapult hybrid.

For me it's the USS Enterprise (CV-6) for making it through all of WW2 while taking part in more major fleet actions in the Pacific than any other ship. Also CVN-65 for being the first nuke carrier and apparently being a general shitshow to service because of it.
8 reactors was fucking insane and retarded. But at the time we didn't know better, unlike the Frenchies who didn't bother to learn from our mistakes and decided to make the same mistake 40 years after we found out this was a horrible idea.

While I am a Merkia fan boy, one thing I really will say, we got very lucky in our hopes and designs for carriers, since during ww2 and before we all shit out what we thought we wanted or needed from them and in ways some fit niches almost better. But the US design has always been top dog and I don't really know a carrier I'd say since 30s that was made that could hold a candle to ours in both designs and operation. Some of the Jap stuff was pretty decent in a compartive manner but just not as good when it came to both crewing and concept. The British carriers were made for a different kind of engagement and had some how we ever needed a duel out I don't think it would be remotely fair.

She had so many firsts it's unreal. First carrier to get a night-ops designation. First kill on the IJN in the pacific. First American ship to receive a pennant from the British admiralty for being a badass. The most battle stars (20), and at one point she was the sole operational carrier in the entire pacific theater. 900+ japanese planes downed, 70+ japanese ships sunk.

Gotta love the Japanese skirting Article 9 with their "Helicopter Destroyers"
Ah... yes the Izumo-Class. The Japanese have been transitioning them over to F-35B carriers since 2018.

This will bring their new, full operational carrier ships more in line with the USN's Amphibious Assault Ships.

"But BONE_Buddy", I hear an uninformed not sperg say, "Amphibious Assault Ships require Marines!"

Well then, it is a good thing that Japan is training their first batch of Marines since World War 2.

Oh and about that constitution Abe has been trying to get it changed to allow a full military since 2015. While Trump has studiously remained quiet on the issue, most everyone agrees that he is tacitly supporting the Japanese leader in his endeavors.

Fun fact, Trump and Abe had the first Joint Address/American Presidential Inspection of a Japanese Warship in history just a couple of days ago, on the Izumo-Class Kaga.

Is this more or less autistic than trains?

I can't really tell.
You're new to the wonderful world of Defense Sperging aren't you. Well, don't worry... You will soon know.

While Navy Sperging has died down over the last decade or so (only making a minor comeback with the Gerald R. Ford-Class), It still has a very dedicated following. If I feel like it, I will dig up some of the forums I know and post them. Not that there is much value in knowing them, unless of course you are interesting in the minutia of Island Placement or how many Blades should be on a Screw.

This thread is for talking about any aircraft carriers.

How about a planned design, of which, the Keel of the first of its line was actually laid down. Before it was canceled all together, that is. That cancelation would start the infamous "Revolt of the Admirals" during which the power of the navy would decline significantly, and the newly made Air Force would become the forefront of American military strength.

I am of course talking about the United States-Class Aircraft Carrier. It was supposed to be able to carry Heavy Strategic Bombers and their Nuclear payload. The design had no Island to allow aircraft with large wingspans to operate freely.

It also was supposed to weigh 83,200 Tons when fully loaded... The Nimitz and Ford-Classes both weigh over 100,000 Tons.

Landing on the aircraft carrier in flight sim is terrifying. For the WW2 era, I liked the Japanese carriers the best because they had so many layers of arresting wires spaced out far apart, so combined with the good landing flaps and low stall speed of the Japanese aircraft, it was always feeling safe to make a landing on a Japanese carrier. Plus the flight deck felt bigger somehow, maybe since the island was less prominent. In comparison, the American carriers had far fewer arresting wires and spaced more closely together so combined with the generally higher stall speed of the American aircraft, the landings were more scary.

But the worst is in the jet era. The carrier deck doesn't get hardly any bigger or longer, but the planes just get faster and faster. In Korean War era, it's still ok because the naval aircraft still have pretty good lift from the landing flaps and straight wing, but by Vietnam War era, it's truly terrifying to try landing an F-4 on the flight deck because it's pure thrust and has zero redeeming aerodynamic characteristics at low airspeed.

The USS Midway was an interesting ship class. A stepping stone into America’s modern Supercarrier.

That place was a treasure trove of military insight and gear. Once you got past the nationalist dick-waving, of course. When the DMCA hammer fell it fell hard. Killed the site. The core of the moderators made a new site themess.net but it eventually died too.

That was the kind of place where you just shut your mouth and read. No matter what you have to say spergs much better than you were crafting a response much better than you could ever do. Unless it was in their version of A&H, then feel free to shoot your mouth off. Plenty of sperging about Obama and OWS to go around. Rail against socialism one minute then spit fire against anyone altering the VA the next. Total shitshow.

Good times.

You guys remember when the Navy reconsidered to recommission the USS Kitty Hawk back into service back in 2017?

IIRC, the reason why the Royal Navy introduced the sky ramp design was that the Harrier couldn't use catapults because a catapult launch would have put too much stress on the airframe.
A sky-ramp is not expensive (compared to a ctapult system), less complex and doesn't need an operating crew, which might have added some good reasons to their use by the RN too.

Damn, how long has it been since that place got nuked?

I used to visit that place every other day. As usual, I am bad a eulogies. I will say it was a great place and the world lost a lot of work when it went down. Many of the resident experts there, never did public collaboration again after the fall. TheMess was just the Byzantine Empire to MilitaryPhotos Rome.

I think this forum has the potential to become a decent place for this sort of thing.

Anyway, We are off topic.

So, I present to you, the USS Forrestal, AKA The USS Forest Fire.

The first so called supercarrier. The first carrier designed to support jet aircraft. The first carrier to be constructed with steam catapults, angled flight decks, and optical landing systems, instead of being retrofitted. The last mine-line class of carrier that was conventionally powered. The Forrestal brought us through the Vietnam War and suffered greatly for it.

There is a decently publicized conspiracy theory that John McCain caused an incident that killed 131 People. I have seen a lot of analysis on both sides of this theory. I have no opinion on it.

The Forrestal class is beautiful.

Great memoir documentary about Captain Eric 'Winkle' Brown somewhat relevant guys a legend when it comes to naval air power testing

from wikipedia
British Royal Navyofficer and test pilot who flew 487 types of aircraft, more than anyone else in history.[1][3][4] He was also the most-decorated pilot in the history of the Royal Navy.[5]

Brown holds the world record for the most aircraft carrier deck take-offs and landings performed (2,407 and 2,271 respectively)[1] and achieved several "firsts" in naval aviation, including the first landings on an aircraft carrier of a twin-engined aircraft, an aircraft with a tricycle undercarriage, a jet-propelled aircraft, and a rotary-wing aircraft.
