Addiction is a huge issue and particularly in the US, treatments for addiction are sorely lacking. This article explains a lot about AA as a cultural phenomenon, despite the fact that it's actually terribly ineffective.
Having had some experience with addiction treatment in the US, I think a lot of it is based on wishful thinking, to say the least.
What is it like in your country?
Have you ever struggled with addiction or know someone who has? I think everyone knows someone like this. I recently found out my mom used to be a huge alcoholic, but I never saw her like that. I'm not sure why she stopped other than meeting my dad.

I was addicted to alcohol, nicotine, and tramadol. After an OD, I quit them all at once. I'm still recovering from the effects of the OD, but I'm proud to say I haven't slipped.

When I faced death from addiction, it was pretty easy to quit. I don't think I could have quit any of them for anything less than a mortal threat.

Everyone here is at least an alcoholic. Then there are the drug addicts. Somewhere below that, you'll find the furries. And the bronies. And thanks to @Meowthkip we even have tumblrs.

I am blessed with a non-addictive personality. I used to drink, then I stopped because I felt like and now don't touch the stuff. I tried smoking a few times but found it gross. I have done nearly every drug at least once and never succumbed to addiction. I can understand that what I do makes me feel good or acknowledge the craving to do it again but my will is strong enough not to.
