This is my first OP, so let me know if there's anything to improve on.

Alivia D'Andrea is a youtuber with humble beginnings. Some years ago her videos were primarly focused on flexibility stretches and travel vlogs. None of it is very interesting or Lolcow worthy. There are two videos of note however which display the pseudo-intelluctalism we will have to hear in her current content. She is increasingly becoming more embarrassing with each video with eating disorder denial, giving rampant misinformation and following broscience.

This video is the general "be yourself, believe in yourself, don't listen to others"bs. It's a little cringy but harmless. Especially since Alivia is only sixteen here. The thing with Alivia though is that this sperg about dreams and following your heart never ends. No matter how bad she is doing, no matter how unqualified she is, you are bound to get advice from Alivia deep throated into you.

Apparently this video won Alivia first prize at her school's film festival for this. Nothing more to say than just cringe.

In 2018, Alivia began a series on her Youtube Channel called "The Glow Up Diaries". The intention of this was to show her glow up journey with the appeal that many could relate. Here is the Glow Up Diaries Season One Trailer:

If you can't be bothered to watch it, or tried to and cringed too hard, a brief summary is that Alivia had really bad acne, a bit of fat and wanted to "glow up" mentally and physically. In this we see that Alivia is starting to fixate on weight and her unhealthy eating habits but here it just seems like a pretentious girl filming her "life journey". One thing that has always struck me is that for someone who hates themselves, Alivia sure does like gross close ups of her face.

Here is a small timeline of what happened during that season: (there's also a more detailed timeline below covering each episode)
  • Alivia wants to loose weight and get rid of acne
  • Starts exercising and working out
  • Binge eats
  • Get rejected from every college and settles for one in California
  • Restricts
  • Binge eats
  • Restricts
  • Binge Eats
  • Visits Shanghai where she restricts, then binge eats
  • Drops out of college and decides to study in Taiwan
  • Restricts
  • Binge Eats
  • Finish
Episode 1

You would expect a glow up diary to be about mental challenges as well as physical ones but nope. In Episode one, you recieve the usual obvious advice from Alivia delivered in her signature obnoxious know-it-all way. The episode is primarily focused on food. Who am I kidding? It's all about food. The funniest part of this is that Alivia tells her fans to do things like watch a vegan documentary and other such nonsense when even two years after this upload, she still doesn't have her shit together. Note: Alivia acts like the documentaries she watched changed her life and will repeat this behaviour despite not changing her habits.

Episode 2

This episode is rather boring and if you're going through this highly edited, disguised mess you can probably skip it. It's just Alivia gushing about how different her (eating) habits are. You might be spotting a pattern here where Alivia keeps giving what she believes to be inspirational advice despite only being successful for a week or two. She always seems to forget this advice and fails in the end. This episode is where Alivia begins her habit of slowly reading the definition of words like "willpower" to seem smart. It's grating. Oh, and there are THREE sponsors on this video.

Episode 3

Alivia binge eats on camera and cries about it. Her voice over gives even more advice. Blah, blah, blah. She works out. Then Alivia finds out she was rejected from her dream college. I'd say it's the first time in the series that Alivia is relateable, and sympathetic. And thankfully, there's no pandering advice about it. She also recommends skin care products and lists them in the description with affiliate links.

Episode 4

Not only was Alivia not accepted by her dream college, she was rejected from every single one. It seems she's not as smart as she makes herself out to be. Despite her affliliate linked products, Alivia's acne has returned. Alivia only uploads episodes months after filming which means she knew these products weren;t working in the long run, yet made affiliate links anyway. Blah Blah Blah. More acne advice + shilling her amazon links. Talks about being motivated - oh, wait. It's an audible sponsor. Nothing wrong with sponsors but the way Alivia places them seems very manipulative and predatory considering her young audience imo.

Alivia decides to take Accutane for her acne.

Near the end of the episode, Alivia flies out to Portland to be apart of some Nike campaign about how fat kids are.

Episode 5

Alivia goes grocery shopping. When Alivia gets home to make a meal, she alludes to the fact that she has to space out her meals as she finds it stops her binging. This is a common way of treating Binge Eating Disorder, which Alivia totes does not have because BED is just a mindset. Yeah, we'll get to that later. She makes healthy meals, and a healthy food sponsor.

Alivia goes dorm shopping. Another trait of Alivia's is exposed. She seems to have an inability to acknowledge how much her financial status helps her in life. Her parents are clearly in the upper middle class at least. A lot of her advice is buy clothes that make you feel good, buy $10 products for your skin, buy boho stuff to fill your new dorm room. This becomes even more prevalent as the series goes on.

Episode 6

This episode begins in Hawaii. Alivia informs us that she hasn't be following her Glow Up Journey to enjoy the small things... you know, like vacations in a beautiful Hawaiian villa. Afterwards she struggles to get back on track and resolves this by... going to Vegas? Yeah, totally relatable Alivia. Still being off track, she promotes Hello Fresh.

Episode 7

Alivia applies for the University of California and gets in. This episode is Alivia talking about the things she's doing before starting college. She gives advice on how there are many non-costly non-food rewards you can give yourself. Ironic. Gives advice on exercising which in all fairness, Alivia seems pretty consistent with. It's the food which gets her. Speaking of, Alivia binges again. Queue obnoxious advice about how hard moving an hour away from your parents is. Oh and they cut her off. Alivia acts as though this is a huge deal despite the fact that her Youtube channel is making her big bux. Between sponsors, ad revenue and affiliated links, it's pretty clear she is making a shit ton of money. I should mention at this stage that Alivia is only uploading an episode every few months and each one gets 1million + views. How will she ever make it?

Episode 8

Right in with a disclaimer from Alivia that she does not have an eating disorder. She just fell for diet culture... and has an unhealthy relationship with food. Not like those weirdos with eating disorders.

Alivia did loose weight but in the wrong way as she admits herself. She is increasingly obsessed with what is healthy and what is bad food. She even addresses that she was missing balance, which is confusing considering her latest content where she claims sugar is the root of all evil. Gives more tips because she is obviously qualified to do so as she refuses to acknowledge her disorder whether it's BED or Orthorexia or both. Works out even more. Her advice here isn't the worst but as someone who can't see when she has a toxic mindset toward food, giving food advice probably isn't the best option.

Alivia goes home and binges due to her extreme restriction. Woah, another sign of a binge eating disorder. Who woulda thunked.

Episode 9

Guess who is binging again? At this point, I have to wonder the point in this series. It's just bingeing, dieting with little life tidbits here and there. Anyway, Alivia and her dorm room mate seem to be restricting together. Among the comments of "yes, qween, get a netflix show" are some saying this behaviour seems like an eating disorder. One comment I saw described Alivia's friend like an "ana buddy". It doesn't seem far from accurate. Blah blah blah. More weight loss advice. This advice includes having snacks in moderation. If Alivia does have BED like many speculate there are certain foods she should be avoiding to reduce binges but Alivia knows best I guess.

Alivia always talks about how weight loss should be about health, but yet her actions always show it's about appearence. This is tiring.

Episode 10

Working out, planning, whatever. Alivia talks about how hard it is to edit youtube videos and claims that she edits everyday. Yeah, gonna doubt that. Anyway, she admits to obsessing over attention / views and it makes me wonder if she also obsessed over how money she could gain? More talk about portion control. As if we haven't heard it all over and over again. Weighs herself and is the heaviest weight she's ever been. Alivia talks about how bad her sugar cravings are. If you're curious, Alivia has restarted her weight loss journey five times now.

Family hides snacks from Alivia as she travels to Vegas with them again. Working out more. Alivia talks about how she didn't eat so she could then eat a fuck ton of dessert. Still, totes not Binge Eating Disorder.

Episode 11

Alivia can't fit into her old clothes sizes and gives more advice on weight loss. It's also exam week which Alivia uses as an excuse to binge. People with BED often binge because of stress. Does finals. If you haven't realised by now, as the episodes go on there is more footage but less actual content.

Episode 12

Alivia thinks about dropping out of college, so her and her friends buy tickets to Shanghai in a few days. This is where her audience really began to see her as unrelatable. Of course, this is Alivia's journey but at the beginning Alivia was just a girl trying to grow up a little. Now she's off on expensive trips. Oh, and this episode was released 5 months after the last one. Five months. Alivia drops out of college completely. How ever will our darling survive with rich parents and a high ass salary? More awful voice over.

Episode 13

Alivia reveals that since she paid her college for the semester already she's going to stay for another quarter. Seems retarded but whatever. Working out more. Admits she was primarly focused on weight loss but now she is totally being moderate. Has nightmares about binging.

Alivia cries about how on, yet another family trip, she had such a healthy relationship with food until mommy ruined it. Alivia's mother grew up with barely enough to eat so seeing Alivia binge makes her upset, understandably. Alivia claims she was eating everything (healthy and unhealthy) in moderation. She bubblers like a child and it's really pathetic. Her mom said to her "what's the point of trying to eat healthy after the way you've eaten this weekend". Boo hoo.

Episode 14

More working out. More dropping out of college. Nothing interesting.

Episode 15

Alivia decides to move to Asia and study there. Goes shopping and realises people aren't always as happy as they seem. She is such an advanced being. In this video Alivia says that season 2 will begin in October 2020. It only just began in January 2021. Makes some friends in Taiwan. Restricts and binges even more. Enjoying this successful journey yet? Begins considering blowing off friends to have a massive binge night. Gives even more advice.

Episode 16

More complaining about clothes not fitting and gaining weight. Admits binging is a stress reliever. More advice on how to deal with binging from the expert. Admits she exercises for the wrong reason and that she stops exercising during binges. Alivia cries about not loving herself.

Whilst all of this may make Alivia inconsistent and obsessed with weight, it doesn't make her worth a thread. What does is her most recent behaviour. Alivia has finally decided to bless us with season two. And she for sure has a better relationship with food this time guys, she promises.

It's almost forty minutes of whinging and moaning about her weight. And shilling out her new merch. Her fans by the end of season one were growing tired of her and the weight loss so to start a new season with weight loss, weight loss, weight loss wasn't the way to go. The whole video is pretty much promotion for the next video. More and more fans are now comfortable and confident with saying that it's pretty obvious Alivia has a eating disorder; something mental which weight loss isn't going to solve.

I bring to you episode two:

This one is a real cluster fuck. You have your general schtick of Alivia giving life changing advice. It goes on for twenty minutes until she begins to promote a personal trainer and the remaining twenty minutes is just a compilation of misinformation from Steve, her trainer. Alivia failed with Steve at first but is now succeeding with him and links his website in the description. According to this bro, sugar is what makes you gain weight, you need a symmetrical body and you need to starve the fat.

Alivia released this statement in her comment section and on her community tab address those who think this episode is a massive ad for Steve's website.

Alivia often deflects critism by giving out inspiring platitudes and really speaking a shit ton without saying anything.

Of course the video had even more comments on her Binge Eating Disorder than the last one. The comments regarding that are pretty much the same as the last video's. Alivia released a statement on her community tab regarding the situation:

alivia statement 2.png

Her proof for not having an eating disorder is very flimsy. Someone on an ED hotline surely can't diagnose you. Some other farmers might have to clue into that one. But if you watched any of her videos (and if you haven't, I don't blame you) Alivia has said this all before over and over again. "I need to admit I'm weak". Every video is presented like she changed but she never does. Personally, I feel like Alivia is currently resenting her fans for telling her she has an ED instead of telling her what a skinny legend she is now. Not longer after this statement, Alivia released a video denying the ED and pretty much saying what she did in her statement.

Yeah, not everyone was convinced.

Among this comment section was a very interesting comment denying the existence of Binge Eating as a disorder. However, the really interesting part is Alivia's response.
alivia on bed.png

There are comments trying to correct Alivia which she has ignored entirely. Something tells me she wouldn't put this. Also, she fails to adress the misinformation by the trainor.

I found this clip from an Instagram Live she did. She seems to think fasting will cure binge eating. This girl thinks restriction will help binges but also says restrictions are what cause binges. This video is super condscending as she is offering advice to the binge eating community whilst believing their disorder is just their fault not a mental illness. Oh, and she congratulates someone called "simply ana" on restricting for 10 hours then barely eating,

And this brings us to where we are now though.
