TGWTG Allison Pregler / Obscurus Lupa / Movie Nights - Reviewer, The vindictive leader of #ChangeTheChannel, GOTIS personified, vendetta against The Cinema Snob

To be fair, Lupa isn't quite the vacuum of charisma that MarzGurl is, and I still maintain that MarzGurl has somehow proven herself over the past year to be a level of crazy that even Lupa can't reach (because her arms aren't as long).

I think the root of Allison's problem, more than anything, is simply her chosen media of specialty. While the core audience of TGWTG may have had a healthy percentage of weebs, one could also make the case that Kaylyn tapped into a different sort of niche not a lot of other people could cover with her anime reviews, as droning and nondescript as they were. Allison, meanwhile, is just another film reviewer. The site had already been oversaturated with those guys even by the time she joined it. At that point for her it became a question of "Okay, so you review movies. Literally everyone here has reviewed movies to some degree and a lot of them specialize in reviewing movies like you do, so what do you bring to the table? What do you have that others like the Nostalgia Critic and the Cinema Snob don't?" And unfortunately (for Allison, not so much for us), she just couldn't keep up with the rest of the crowd.

So Lupa needed assistance to get by in the surprisingly cutthroat industry of Internet content creation, even with the smaller round of competition that TGWTG provided for her. She couldn't quite do it alone. So what she did for more exposure was collaborate with some of the bigger names of the site. If it weren't for her long, well-documented history of Internet shitfits, you probably wouldn't have known who the fuck she was if she didn't make a guest appearance in Doug's review of The Room. But since most of those bridges have long been incinerated (all because of her) and the only people willing to touch her now are those in her bitchy little in-clique, her content has been left to suffer and she gets left in the dust as just another shitty YouTuber.
Lupa did have her own schtick to sorta set her apart from the rest. She reviewed schlocky direct to video Z movies. It was something but goddamn does she make making fun of material like The Amazing Bulk boring to watch.

Uhm, Brad did it first. Then I think either Lupa was 2nd or it was Phelous. Then came two or three other horror/B movie reviewers. Brad did it better as I said many pages ago.

IIRC, Brad did horror and porn parodies, so there was still ample room for Allison to join. Heck, maybe that was the initiative for her and Brad's former friendship. But that lack of humor in her reviews… UUUUURRRGGGHH

Just an offside comment, but I first found out about her trying to watch that fucking Suburban Knights movie with my brother where she was LARPing as Snow White.

No joke, not trying to be cute or funny, but I honestly thought at first she was a drag queen when she pranced out wearing that.

Looking back the only thing that really stood out about Lupa was that she sort of had a positivity in her reviews. Even when it was clear that what she was reviewing was complete shit she still gave off the impression that she enjoyed it.

It's ironic given just what a miserable bitch she comes off as now and days.

To me, the sad thing is that I see some potential in her having a unique review style. I just wish she put more effort in making good content than in being the human version of D’Vorah, a toxic bitch.

Because as painfully cringy and unfunny the Nostalgia Critic schtick is, there is a market for it.

There is a market for pretentiously smug pseudo intellectual high-school level "analysis" of films which is why Lindsay has gin-money.
I'll throw in a tepid defense of TGWTG here. It was a decent niche at the start, applying an actual critical lens to an era when pop culture exploded into ubiquity. These were people who wasted their college loans on film school and theater, and to be fair they put those useless skills to semi-productive use. People find value in learning how to appreciate things in a different way, and there's value in figuring out why a story bugged you for some reason you can't quite put a finger on.

But there's a difference between critical analysis of structure, plot, story beats, characterization, and yelling HURR DURR DIS DUMB. I stopped watching Channel Awesome one day when I saw the entire front page, every single video, was people just smugly shitting on things. It wasn't properly critical; the videos were bland, predictable, and puerile... just like the pop culture artifacts they claimed to critique. The genre flamed out once the source materials were picked over and the handful of clever observations had already been made.

To give an example of pop criticism done right, there was a show called Brows Held High by Kyle "Oancitizen" Kallgren. He focused on pretentious art house movies, the kind that film professors and Cannes judges masturbate over and make up sub-sub-genres to classify. He did things like a review of Gerry (featuring Obscurus Lupa!), which took the most boring film possible, applied high art school critical theory to explain why it was made intentionally boring... and managed to make it entertaining. His parody song review of The Man Who Fell To Earth is as close to productive art as you got in this genre.

After a few years he shook up his format and went nuts with SJW nonsense, of course. Almost all of them did. He's now TDS-addled, #resistance, pro-Antifa, with Twitter bio pronouns, the whole works. Critical theory is a far left cultural tool, and even when they tap down the politics long enough to make entertaining deconstructions of Transformers, the dysfunction it encourages eventually comes out.

TL;DR The fault in the Critic's genre was the fault with critical theory itself: eventually, you have torn down everything around you. Your failure to create meaning makes you bitter, feral; and you turn to destroy anything else you can find.

Not a ton, but she's surprisingly thorough considering how garbage those shows are. She puts in a shocking amount of effort.
Therin lies the rub. Imagine if she put some of that effort into NOT being an insufferable wench and preparing herself for life outside of being a youtuber.

And I say that as someone who liked her content up until a few years ago.

Marzgurl seems to like loud talking without an ounce of charisma.

Lupa tries to come off as energetic, perky and quirky but really comes off as awkward, annoying and desperate.

Lupa also tends to leech off of other producers who are better known like Linkara and Erod, hell she even tried to leech off of Dougs and Brads popularity before she decided to hate them.

Marzgurl's development into the increasingly unstable mess she is today has been interesting to watch. Allison has been prone to public drama her entire online career, which has come out in bursts here and there. Most of Kaylyn's got bottled up for a long time which only made it way, way more toxic once it eventually came out.

Most of Marzgurl's problems with CA boiled down to her feeling ignored or not even thought about. She's talked about how hurt she was that she never got to do a crossover with Doug like a lot of others did. Because she covered all the Land Before Time movies, she said people were e-mailing her whenever Doug reviewed a Don Bluth film, asking why he didn't ask her to collaborate. She didn't take the bull by the horns and just ask Doug for a crossover. Nope...she sulked and felt sorry for herself in silence. She did the same thing when Rob would overlook her during projects ("Oh...didn't notice you were here.") or overlook her when she wasn't there ("Didn't realize you've been gone for months. Whoops!").

Combining this with her low viewership, you'd think she'd be clued in that there's something wrong with her approach to making content. Instead she goes all in on a silent pity party for herself that slowly but surely builds a ton of resentment. If it were an office job, Allison would be someone the whole place would gradually turn against and shun based on her outgoing unpleasantness. Kaylyn is the co-worker who's virtually invisible to everyone else there until the day she comes in and shoots up the office.

well, she admits herself that this garbage is what she loves the most. That's probably why she feels passionate when she talks about these cheesy shows.
