The basic idea of social justice is about creating and promoting equality for everyone, and recognizing how society screws over people who don't fit a certain mold, whether it be race, gender, sexuality, class, what have you. What ends up happening, especially with a lot of teenagers and young adults that lack experience, is that they take the ideas from it, realize society is unjust and start seeking revenge on "oppressors." This leads to a shitton of bitterness and negativity and general misery. Not everybody who blogs about such things falls into that trap, but it is very easy to.

I try very hard to think of a lot of these people as well-meaning, because they are. Even if I disagree, I think they deserve the right to be heard.

And then you have people like Vade who use the ideas of social justice as a cudgel and really don't give a shit about anybody but themselves. If Vade cared so much about ableism, they would have been furious over their followers telling that mentally ill kid that they deserved to die or should have stayed at the psychiatric hospital. But instead, Vade saw fit to label them as manipulative and hardly batted an eye when the kid was having an obvious breakdown.

Vade doesn't give a shit about justice. They just want to wage war.

Pretty much. In a way it almost makes sense that people like otherkin would start to pop up eventually. In a world of over 7 billion humans it can become all too easy to see oneself as just another number and fall prey to nihilism. By deluding themselves to such a level as the otherkin have, they can feel, if only for a little while, that they are something more, something unique. I pity them for their inability to cope with reality, and feel contempt for them being too wrapped up in fantasy to actually be something more through old-fashioned human sweat, toil, and blood.

And then there's Vade. Who was either spanked too much as a kid, or not enough.

The humorous irony is that Vade and Vade's hate brigade are fucking bush-leaguers as far as internet war is concerned. They can dish it out with ridiculous fare, but they cannot, for the life of them, take it. Not even a little. Vade constantly shuffles tumblrs to avoid critics and flees like tumblr's going out of style if anyone manages to call Vade out on bullshit (like Vade not actually being autistic and medical professionals bringing up that knowing someone's biological gender is important to avoid medical reactions for drugs and therapies). It's very clear that Vade's shitty empire would collapse utterly under one sustained assault from any halfway competent group of internet warriors, which is probably why TF2shatfest has managed to kick their ballocks in so resoundingly just by listening and reporting.

The identity politics of otherkin is a fairly new development. I remember being astounded when otherkin were attempting to piggyback onto the social justice for the first time like three or four years ago. It's an entirely different animal (heh) from the weird but usually harmless nerd claiming to have a spiritual connection with wolves or something.

It's truly been fascinating to watch.

This may just be me- but after reading a newspaper or checking my PC news feed, and seeing what disgusting, destructive bits of fuckery the supposedly sane members of our species gets up to on a daily basis- I can kinda see the reason people go into the "-kin" lifestyle. I think the reason the otherkin hang on to their label is that it makes their life less mundane and more special because they have done nothing special.

I think a lot of it stems from untreated mental illness (like depression or autism or anxiety, not like actual schizophrenia or clinical lycanthropy) and teenage feelings of being isolated and lonely, like nobody can possibly relate to them, so they feel that maybe they aren't human, that they're something more. Then they run into a group of people who feel the exact same way only hey, they're animals and anime characters and shit. That's why so many otherkin are so young.

A lot of them grow out of it, but not all do. Some cling to it because the alternative is admitting that they're a person with unaddressed problems and not that special, really.

I think if I'd been fully aware of otherkin as a teenager I could have very well become one.

Yeah, I hear its also really bad for people with legit serious mental problems because there tends to be a very, veeery anti-psychiatry stance. Its like be a ten headed wolf with nine wings and 20 buttholes all you want, but never go see a shrink because they're evil oppressors who'll lock you up and murder your head mates.

There's so many different kinds of toxic behavior at work its almost amazing.

I also had the realization that people almost as batshit, if not just as batshit as Jen from the notorious FF7 house are pretty common in the otherkin/multiple side of tumblr. Hell from experience I'd say Karkat is pretty equal to Jen in terms of batshit insanity/terrible behavior/etc, and I'm tempted to say the... thing this thread's about is as well.
