NOOOOO NOT LEGALLY BLONDE AND JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS
The 2001 Josie and The Pussycats movie and it's story about a media brainwashing conspiracy in a world where everything is plastered in corporate logos is even funnier in a modern context, especially since they got a Jewish actor, Eugene Levy, to be the spokesman for the conspiracy.

Of course in that movie the conspiracy is simply to make money, because "what's good for the economy is good for you" as Levy puts it.

What the fuck happened to government stopping monopolies from forming? Much smaller companies have gotten in much more legal trouble for much less.
The corporations just essentially bought the government.

I was just musing a few days ago about how we're getting close to Demolition Man, only instead of Taco Bell owning everything, it'll be Amazon owning everything.

When's Amazon going to buy out Taco Bell?
Better Amazon than some of these companies, I could be very well wrong about this but while Bezos is a douchebag he strikes as slightly less of a douchebag than a Bill Gates or a Mark Zuckerberg.

If some guy has to take over the world we could do worse than Bezos, is all I'm saying, but that certainly is not a great thing.

seriously buying MGM buys you, like, that lion logo, a shitload of "it's two in the afternoon on a uhf station" grade shit, and an option to participate in a few franchises some people care about
it's a good position for Amazon but "MGM" has been a vague concept at most for decades
It is a weirdly lesser studio than some of the other major ones, for me personally there's no MGM property I really, really love like I love Indiana Jones (Paramount, now Disney of course), Ghostbusters (Colombia) or Jurassic Park (Universal) or Batman (Warner Bros)

Maybe my favorite MGM movie off the top of my head is Poltergeist, I do really like James Bond but not on the level that I like something like Ghostbusters.

MGM has no say in LotR at all, that was a WB and Newline, however MGM did own the rights to the Hobbit and a deal was made with WB to fund and distribute them, so those three Hobbit movies WB likely have ownership of, however if MGM wanted to remake the Hobbit they very well could. Also worth noting Amazon has licensed the LotR tv rights from WB, but that is just for prequel shit and no signs of them being allowed to do anything with the 3 main books. But the question is if MGM owns a movie or just the rights to the ip, will becoming up a lot, many of their later movies were co-funding and distribution deals, so MGM post 1986 may have less notable titles than people think. But still have a number of ips to milk, like Robocp, Stargate, Death Wish and others, as well as a few one off movies they could remake or turn into tv shows.

Honestly this a good deal for MGM, they needed someone to buy them out and Amazon right now have no studios like MGM, so downsizing is unlikely and Amazon need content, especially if they want to get back as much money as they can for the price they paid. I expect big management change ups however and with MGM putting out more content as the solo funder. Do wonder if MGM will try to walk back any deals already in place, and if any deals like with the Creed movie will last beyond Creed 3 to Creed 4 and the such. Big question is if Amazon will be using MGM as a way to get into the cinemas and if they will start funding new original ips thru MGM, as they only have so many ips that could be milked and that will only get Amazon so far.

This isn't a monopoly at all, even if Amazon bought one of the bigger studios it wouldn't be, as Amazon didn't have much presence in this industry. Now stuff like Disney buying Fox and especially at&t Time Warner acquisition, those for sure should never have been allowed.

LOTR is sure gonna look different with all the Sub-Saharans being shipped to middle earth as we speak. Oh well, at least it will finally have some dieversity then.

Not really, especially after The Expanse turned into shit and LotR is in production hell.
I still have some hope though since MGM got Brad Wright to work on a new show.
Honeslty I don't want a new stargate show not in this current year

It is interesting to see what Jeff is throwing his money at; and what other ultra wealthy men are throwing their money at.

Bill Gates, Elon and Jeff seem to have ensured that they don't cross paths.

Bill will own all the food and water ways.
Elon will control new energy and the objects that use them (spaceships, cars)
Jeff will control consumables entire infrastructure.

I personally like Elon's approach. He isn't after the Moon. Or Mars. He is after those asteroids and possible mining of H3 on the moon. He is a smart SOB. These NASA contracts allow him to take NASA where they want - but it's his Autobahn and they are paying him to build it.
