AMC Orders Pilot for Adaptation of Preacher Comic -

I've been waiting for this for ages, as Preacher is one of my all-time favorites. I hope they don't fuck it up- though AMC is the only non-subscription network I'd trust with it, so that's a good sign.

Fucking finally! They've been in production with this forever.

They're still going to have to tone back a lot, which is a shame, since part of Preacher's energy is in its unabashed raunchiness and willingness to Go There, but other than that, I trust these guys. They brought us Breaking Bad and managed not to pull a lot of punches.

The Walking Dead can get pretty grotesque, too, so I don't think they're going to have to cut as much as we might think. Probably just the most overtly sexual stuff, which can still be integrated a little bit with clever discretion shots and such.

Haven't read Preacher personally but I'm skeptical of AMC pulling it off. I don't trust them after turning Walking Dead into the neverending pop culture circlejerk it is today. Makes me think they're just going to try to replicate its success.

That being said, Preacher's an odd choice for a television series in that its not relevant to the times and has been finished for around 20 years right? So good on them for at least giving it a chance.

DC Comics tend to get their TV shows right. Glad it's on AMC but FX could probably have done it right too.

Preacher is in my Top 5 favorite comics series of all time. I swear if they fuck this up I will personally have my own "blue arms" moment.

But yeah, AMC might maybe be able to some of it right, but I honestly don't know anyone short of HBO that will be able to do this show right. We're talking about a comic whose main character, Jesse Custer, burns down his church with all the parishioners inside of it (he didn't mean it though... technically), and his best buddies are a woman-abusing vampire, and a recovering drug addict hitman ex-girlfriend. Along his journey, Jesse meets an inbred son of Jesus Christ, a morbidly obese secret-pope, a main villain with a dick shaped head, a pair of sex detectives, a dude with a fetish for fucking meat, a suicide voodoo cult, and Arseface, a kid who tried to go out the way Cobain did but ended up with a face that looks like a bunghole. And that's from what I can remember from the top of my head.

But yeah sure. AMC.

A lot of TV envelope has been pushed between the end of the print run of Preacher and AMC picking up the series. Just keep most of the violence, cut away at the right time during sex scenes, and there's enough to keep the purists and the FCC happy.

I'm not so much worried about it being toned down as dumbed down. Preacher is the sort of story that you need balls to tell, not because of the filth or the gore but because of the irreverence. That's the shit they're going to change, and that's what's going to make it suck.

I mean, maybe it won't. I can't prove it will be. I also can't prove that when I drop a ball it will fall the ground. Just because it has every other time I've done so doesn't mean that it absolutely will this time. Maybe Preacher will be good, and maybe our senses are lying to us and we're really in the Matrix.

I can already hear One Million Moms, Glen Beck and the entire religious right seething if this ever goes through. As a fan of the comic, I'm really interested in seeing how it will turn out. In a weird way, I wouldn't mind seeing Mark "Undertaker" Calaway audition for the Saint of Killers.

Bill Hicks shows up in a long flashback scene, but he's not a major character. I'd love to see him turn up in the show, perhaps with archival footage.

Wizard Magazine had an interesting idea of how to do John Wayne's part (he's Jesse's guardian angel or spirit guide) when they did a pretend casting call. And that was to do the same thing they did with the dead famous people in Forrest Gump by using footage of him in his scenes).
