This is something that's come up a lot in the past four years of Trump presidency. Trump's campaign, from its earliest days, proudly proclaimed 'America First!' and Trump has undisputedly proven that he believes in this message and is doing everything in his power to enforce it. NAFTA restructuring, pulling out of the Middle East, making aggressive noises at NATO and the UN, and rising tension with China are all pointing to the image of America, the world's peacemaker turned janitor, standing alone and away from the rest of the world, 'letting the dead bury their own dead' so to speak.
My question is, what would a truly 'America First' policy look like at its natural conclusion? Is pulling our muscle out from NATO and the UN the right choice? Is burning diplomatic bridges and forcing the people on the other end to rebuild to our standard the right choice? What does the world look like for Americans living in a new age of isolationism, if it would look any different? Would such a stance backfire on us in the long run, or is it better that we simply turtle up and keep our own house in order. Can we even do that, as one of the largest nations on earth?
