Agreed, imperial is in theory a terrible system for cooking measurements as it is for chemistry. The problem is that all my good old recipes are written in imperial measurements and adapting them would be a mild pain in the ass.
EDIT: Note that this mainly applies to baking which requires you to be fairly spot-on with measurements and proportions a lot of the time. MOST other cooking isn't quite as demanding.

That's really silly. Potatoes are something you'd measure by approximate weight. Still, a "cup" of potatoes would probably (PROBABLY) mean about half a pound/500g.
EDIT: Unless it's potato flakes. Which you shouldn't use.

You probably just needed to mash them to make one cup. I've seen fucking recipes calling for 100g of eggs. Who the fuck does that?

Modern professional cooks. In today's restaurant kitchens "egg" is a liquid that comes out of a Tetra Pak.
It probably required you to cut up or dice enough potatoes to fit into a cup. Potatoes is admittedly weird, but it's not completely insane. Regardless, what kind of asshole measures liquids in grams? I was making treacle tart a few days ago and it unironically called for 400g of golden syrup.
400g of golden syrup sounds like a totally sane measure to me. How the fuck do you people bake stuff with those retarded volume measurements?
The nice thing about metric for that is 400g is pretty quickly converted one-for-one to ml. Metric is very good that way.
I grew up with them, so I'm used to them, but I do see how they're harder to learn.
Don't even start me on half and half. Someone tried to explain that before but my brain seized up.
But is an American cup more or less than an Imperial cup? How fat am I in Canadian cups?
I once tried a recipe that combined both metric and imperial measurements. It turned out okay (after lots of tedious conversions). Whoever wrote the recipe like that should be punished.
That I can't honestly tell you, I'm just trying to keep myself happy.
