One of these days I'll have to do a frame by frame analysis of this animation to breakdown why it sucks so much. It is insane to think that it is this thing the culmination of his oeuvre. What a waste of time and money was that degree. Imagine if he had to pay back a student loan on top of that. Probably his parents paid for all so there was no incentive for him to work his ass off and git gud.

And of course... he moped about it. He didn't take the opportunity to crunch out a better animation, he just moped about how the new audio can't be used for his video. :story:
Can't make this shit up. Clearly, animation was his passion, when he can't even be arsed to make a new animation.

Fool, you forgot the best frame:

She looks like the colonel from Akira in that one.

Like every tool and technique, "Squash and Stretch" has a time and place and a degree of intensity to said use. The semi-realistic art style in Legend of Korra wasn't particularly fit for such pronounced deformations, much less for the faces. I wouldn't be so critical of Dobson's animation if at the very least he had drawn the characters on-model with the show but that's too much to ask of him, he cannot even keep the proportions consistent within his own style, add deformations and the whole thing goes to shit.

What are you talking about, Mowgli is on-model in ever frame!

Thank you! Since he didn't delete it yet and he might, here's an archived version.

I'll always find Asami's response hilarious because after everything Korra said to her, she just said "wow! um...... yes!" and nothing else to such an emotional moment like a freaking marriage proposal.
Man, that Asami's response & emotionless action is canon.
I'm not joking.

I love how he always refused to go back and fix things because "It's done, so nothing can be changed" even though he was working digitally.

Most likely because if he revealed he was capable of going back and making alterations, he'd be letting the critics win, somehow.

The Giraffe Incident will always be the highpoint of the Dobson saga, even when none of you Kiwifags were around to experience it.

I was there and it was awesome, you had to install some browser extension to be able to draw there iirc. And only others who also had that extension would be able to see the drawings, nobody else. Apparently Dobbo quickly learned people were drawing there, installed it himself and started deleting everything like crazy.

Thing is, the models aren’t being stretched or squashed; they’re just bouncing around like some sort of unintentional episode of Stickin‘ Around. See my avatar… that face morphs and undulates like a soap bubble.

I've never had any sort of animation training, but I'd bet my next paycheck someone who did would take one look at that and say, "Oh, we covered that in the first semester," and explain exactly what Dobson did wrong and how to fix it.
That's why I linked a Soviet cartoon from 1924 -- those guys would have an excuse for not knowing what they were doing. Someone screwing around might post that and say "I've never tried this before but it looks awful -- what did I do wrong?" and I'd respect that, because I have a high tolerance for "I'm trying this for the first time and I'm trying to get better."
But Dobson graduated from an animation school. How could he possibly look at that and think, "Good enough?"

What's kinda tragic is that, over the years and with simply no practice whatsoever, he quickly forgot how to animate like in the videos here and never took his skills from there. If he kept going, learning and improving from that, considering the amount of years, his animations would've been amazing now. Or good enough.

But this is Andrew Dobson, the personification of mediocrity.

In an era where you can copy and paste stuff with only a literal couple of keyboard touches... it speaks volumes about his odd combination of ego, laziness and inability to fundamentally give a fuck that his art behaves like that...

It's literally more work to draw stuff frame-by-frame than copy-paste-and-tweak, but he does it the "hard" way anyway, and then doesn't do the easy work of seeing if it even fits together and making changes digitally, apparently self-assured that since he's an artist, he can do no wrong and just shake it out of his shirtsleeves when it comes to even trying...

I can only liken it to a carpenter who decides to cut his boards with a steak knife instead of a table saw.... and after all the extra effort required, even though he ultimately got a nice, clean, straight cut? He then haphazardly nailed the pieces together at eyeballed angles that aren't even close to being correct....

There's no excuse for that "squiggly" effect outside of deliberate stylistic choice to invoke the look of an incompetent artist, usually an innocently incompetent one like a small child....

This is why Dobson is still talked about. He had skill, he never used it and let it go to waste.

Its almost painful to see how his skill regressed over the years, his pseudo anime look had almost a charm to it, meanwhile his "modern" art style looks awful, like in here:

It's always surprising to see in how many ways he failed and how many aspects of his style is just plain ugly. This image highlights it perfectly.
First of all, the silhouette of the character is way less interesting, the pose is terrible, lacks and dynamic and the character looks flat, like it was made of cardboard.
There are a couple of really odd choices, like making the cuffs and collar stand out so much. The size and length of every object in this image looks terrible, the head is too big, the limbs to short and thick... and then we come to the worst bit: The face.
She looks like a neurotic junkie retard with those sandbags under her eyes and that weird mouth. And what the hell is wrong with her hair?

It's one of those images that becomes worse, the longer you look. Like how the cuff on her front leg indicates that you're looking at it from below or the hind leg, that must be broken at the ankle, given the angle of her foot compared to her knee. Her right forearm looks way too thin. her crotch is all weird and her thighs are misshapen and blocky. In short, it's a Dobson.

I've never once taken an animation class, but Aaron Blaise (Disney animator, worked on Lion King, co-director of Brother Bear) says that when he started out animating, his first job was for the cigar-chomping baby from Who Framed Roger Rabbit. According to story, he did his sketches and flicked them a couple of pages at a time like you've all probably seen. The problem was, he didn't flip the whole shot all the way through. His superiors threw it back at him the next day and said "Flip through the whole thing, idiot," and sure enough, that baby's head is undulating like a beating heart.

I'm guessing Dobbo did something similar; he had his onion skin on (it lets you see a few frames before and behind the one you're working on), but he didn't check his model sheets or run through the whole shot looking specifically for errors in mass.
