This week will be the last new episode until they can resume production sometime in the future. They'll be rerunning episodes 1-5 in the following weeks. Thanks again, China.
Shouta Aoi died on the way back to his planet.
No real surprise, Episode 3 live action bit had all the pedestrians wearing face masks in the background.

I'm thinking of biting the bullet and subbing to Crunchyroll. It seems better than funimation, and I've only got Hulu, Netflix and HDIVE. The former two aren't really for anime and Sentai is kinda limited. Pirating is annoying because I have to use my computer instead of my smart TV. The problem is I hate censorship and changing of the dialogue, though I know that's more common with Funi than Crunchyroll. Can someone tell me if this is a terrible idea? Or should I just continue sailing the high seas?
Personally, I'm subbed to Crunchyroll and mainly use it on my ps4, it's more of a convenience thing for when I'm feeling lazy. I still torrent when something isn't on there, if there's an actual fansub group putting out a release, or the Crunchy release is fucked. If the only torrent release is HS then I just watch on Crunchyroll because it's the same anyway. I've found it to be decent for the price but it would also be the first on the chopping block should I need to cut expenses. Also, if for some reason the ps4 app died and I was restricted to watching it on my computer or phone I would immediately cancel because it's a miserable experience on both.

There's also always services like Plex or UMS where you download anime to your computer and use it as a streaming server for your tv. I know the ps4 has a Plex app and depending on the smart tv it probably also has the app.

Sousou no Frieren (Frieren at the Funeral) is much better than I expected. Both the art and the storytelling are amongst the best fantasy manga I've seen recently.
Unlike other fantasy, in this one the main character party had already beaten the demon king at the start of the story. The story is what happened after, told through the main character view point, an elf with much longer lifespan and different perception of time than her companion.
Even though you know what's the author is aiming for by the title and the setting alone, it's still manage to tug at the right heartstring at the right moment.

I bit the bullet and did the 14 day free trial just to see if I liked it. And holy shit, is the player the worst fucking thing. It is seriously the worst streaming player I have ever used. I know I'm late to the party, but holy shit is this player trash on TV.

The UI is trash and can't compensate for different sizes of TV, so the text looks all fucked sometimes or squished together. The episode count for each anime is completely FUCKED because they include the subs, dubs and dubs in other languages. Life for example, they list Tanya the Evil as having 73 episodes (when in reality its just 13. Even if HULU has dubs the episode count is the real count) and they put the English subs/dubs LAST so you have to scroll through shit like a Portuguese dub. Like fucking really?

There's absolutely no settings at all. So I can't exclude non-English Dubs.

For controls, absolutely fucking terrible. If anyone doesn't know, the Roku TV remote is very minimalist. It has an up down left right with an ok in the middle. If you press up it automatically exits the show you are watching (No other service does this, Hulu, Netflix, HBO, HDIVE etc.). All the services I ever used, you need to either push the back button or home button to stop an episode, and up brought up the UI or highlighted the next episode (depending on the player) and the only UI over the episode is the time remaining, so its very hard to switch between episodes when you're at the credits. You either have to exit completely or fast forward to the end. They don't even have dates for when the anime was made sometimes. At least HDIVE pulls from MyAnimeList and gives you at least a date it was added to the service. You also don't get to force it into HD mode.

I honestly do not know how they get away with this in this day and age. The only advantage they have is just the number of titles. Anyone who thought producing 'High Guardian Spice' instead of investing $500k to not make their fucking streaming service not a fucking embarassment should be fired.

I finally found a site that uploads decent image rips of Heart Gear. So I'mma just leave an entire story arc here for those interested to enjoy.

I always suspected that in the original Macross, "kiss" was a euphemism.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was sometimes. It's part of that Alto and Sheryl thing. When the hot strawberry blonde asks you to "give her courage" in that situation, I'm pretty sure she's not talking about a pep talk. It's funny, because it's almost like the reverse of the Fllay and Jesus Yamato thing everything hated in Gundam SEED.

I am 100% confident harem leads in anime get the least action of any men in all of anime. Its a trick. I've watched different harem anime for comedy purposes. High School DxD, everyone wants to fuck, willing to share fucking duties, protag never fucks a single time. To Luv Ru, surrounded by hot women who want to fuck, never fucks ever. I just CANNOT watch Harem anime anymore. If you've got a harem by episode 6 and you aren't getting laid by episode 7, you have something wrong with you. I'm done with tired, sex-less waifu wars and shit that just show pointless anime tiddy. Movies and shows have done fade to black since 1965 you don't need to be explicit. Just show a physical relationship. They can show people getting chopped in half, mutated, brutally murdered, dissolved into pieces, but you can't show kissing and fade to black in bed. Or basically just constantly unrealistically cock block them so it never ever happens. Like I said, the exceptions to this are 'Love is War' which is basically holding out as long as possible as to admit they actually love each other, which is kind of funny.

That's why I like In/Spectre with an actual defloration joke instead of everyone being perma virgins, Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest who basically outright states 'she's my lover, fuck all the rest of you. You can try, but nope.' There's a couple of others, like Chivalry of a Failed Knight where they get it on in like the second to last episode and shit. Cross Ange: Rondo of Angel and Dragon (which I fucking love, highly underrated anime).

But I've RARELY seen harem protagonists do anything and they really don't behave like men. Even if all the women go, "Ok, you can love all of us, just give us equal attention." NOPE the men act like they're five years old. Naked girl wants to get into a bath with him? "WHATS WRONG PUT SOME CLOTHES ON PLEASE OMG". The only exception is really Val x Date where the protagonist has a serious phobia about human contact and doesn't want anything to do with it.

Macross is more emotional for it because the leads have sex, because they have this physical connection. I've also noticed, the older the anime, the less of a problem this turns out to be.

But its really the biggest anime trope that gets on my fucking nerves. So if you want any sort of physical contact that means something, you generally, ironically, have to avoid harem anime because they stretch that shit out forever with no payoff because the audience is too busy deciding 'best girl'. Another cliche that bugs me is you have these super confident, observant heroes but they can't seem to take the most obvious hints when a girl wants them, to the level that even people on the autism spectrum can tell. The exception really is 'Black Clover' where I think Asta is legitimately autistic and can't tell and just wants a nun who literally cannot be in a relationship and has been telling him no for a decade. I mean the dude wants to be Wizard King and he can't use magic, so he's kinda not all there to begin with.

Or another thing is that the anime waits until the very last POSSIBLE second for characters to form relationships so there's no possible development or drama with them. Half the fun of having characters be in relationships is to see how much you can fuck with them with it. So sexless, loveless anime just kills the genre for me. Like come on Japan, people fuck. This is why you have a low birth rate.

I'm sort of torn on the subject of sex in fiction. I think that to some extent it's a problem with cliches.

It does get a little annoying when a story just has to shoehorn in a romance plot that has zero impact on the story except to prove the protagonist isn't gay. On the other hand, it's a little strange when you have a bunch of characters and nobody has a serious relationship.

Sometimes thwarted sex is funnier than sex, sometimes the story wants a slow burn where it looks like there's going to be a relationship but it never quite happens. It is interesting how hard it seems to be to hit something that feels credible, where some characters are in a solid relationship and others are having personal drama.

I agree Macross seemed to hit the sweet spot.

It's sad, because my first was Tenchi Muyo and I enjoyed that one but future harem make you notice all the issues that you bring up here and it makes me look back and enjoy it a little bit less. At least Tenchi had the excuse that his harem was made up of some of the most powerful beings in the universe. Love is War is great, and different, since the real issue is their own pride, not getting cock blocked or being asexual losers. They want the physical relationship, but neither of their egos could handle the rejection, thus the song and dance.

I think that's the part that bugs me the most. In reality, the women would have moved on at some point. They wouldn't just take the constant rejection they'd move on to greener pastures. If they were all so obsessed they couldn't, they'd all just physically gang up on the main character and Misery him. It's not like most harem leads are physically impressive either.

Macross is more emotional for it because the leads have sex, because they have this physical connection. I've also noticed, the older the anime, the less of a problem this turns out to be.
Older anime and anime made by that older set of creators does seem more grounded. I don't know if it's just those older types have more normal backgrounds to pull from or if they're not as beholden to the current crowd of Otaku that demand these sackless leads.

My favorite Macross relationship is Max and Milia, since it's the only one that's constantly, if subtly, looked back on. You get to watch it from their first date/knife fight/marriage proposal beginnings through to their issues in Macross 7 to the subtle nod of them still being together in Macross Delta, fifty some years later. Also seven biological daughters. I honestly think Max is Catholic, there are some subtle indicators of it.

But its really the biggest anime trope that gets on my fucking nerves. I sometimes wonder if that isn't something that directly contributes to the Japanese not fucking. If so much of your pop culture is focused on being clueless, or delaying relationships, or avoiding sexuality entirely, it has to have some kind of effect even beyond Otaku.

I think Macross just takes the time to establish and build the relationships. The original establishes the Hikaru/Minmei/Misa triangle from the first episode and then builds on it until the last. It doesn't just delay it, everything in it is built from one episode to the next so there's a feel of actual progress so when Hikaru picks Misa in the end it makes sense, after all we've seen their relationship build for 36 episodes. It's the same thing in Frontier, Alto and Sheryl build from episode 5. I know the series ends a bit inconclusively, but that's only because Kawamori was convinced by his staff to end that way. Frontier is, in Macross terms, a love song to the original so it rhymes with it, and Sheryl is the Misa.

I think that's what a lot of anime and manga lack in terms of relationship building. These harems or pairings just happen, or they're established and never go anywhere. It's weird too. I referenced Fllay and Jesus Yamato in Gundam SEED, which is hated by fans, yet to me it felt like it made more logical sense than the pairing the show ended up with. Even if it was just Fllay banging him to keep him killing the people that killed her father.

If you hadn't specifically mentioned it in your post, I would have brought up Black Clover as a funny subversion of harem tropes. Asta is pretty much pure heart and determination, which does make him basically autistic with regards to a lot of stuff, especially being completely unaware that practically every female character in the series wants his dick. At the same time, he's so devoted to the idea of marrying Sister Lily that it's arguably the entire drive for his character; he explicitly says at the very beginning that he wants to be the Wizard King because he thinks that once he does, he can come back and get her to marry him. He's a character that thrives on the impossible, and any time someone tells him "no you can't" he immediately goes "OH YEAH, FUCKING WATCH ME." Girls tripping over his dick make it too easy. It's just one of many reason why I love the series.

Otherwise, yeah, harem shows can get real fucking old. There's only so many times you can get cockblocked before you're tired of it. I feel like the only way to find a fair amount of actual sex (explicit or implicit) is to go back to old 80's or 90's OVAs and watch those instead. Something about modern anime is just allergic to the idea of sex.

If you guys can tell me what's wrong with this picture, congratulations, you're either a mega level autistic, or have the intellectual capacity to match Einstein; even though he was pretty fucking autistic himself.

Jokes aide, this made me laugh way too much.

Yeah between doing the cross thing and having a wife/clown car there's good reason to suspect Max is Catholic

Also their first daughter's name is Komilia Maria and he doesn't divorce Milia for all her bullshit in Macross 7. Most of their daughters jumped ship for that and Mylene is too young.

You'd think visual novels would've helped because they're not afraid to show the main character getting it on with every girl he dates, but guess not. Hell, they can't really adapt these dating sim VNs faithfully because they have to cut out the sex from many of them (of which it doesn't affect the plot at all because the sex was that shoe-horned in), so the waifu wars continue.

But I guess it's telling when the only Key animated adaption to have sex (least alluded to) is CLANNAD but you still never see a kiss on-screen. I don't even remember the movie having a kiss on-screen, but the AIR movie did, and so did Kanon. Pretty fickle.

In the anime was not show but in the LN the loli actually rape the fuck out of the MC, repeatedly, i dropped it at the vol 2 because how dumb was getting

"Ok, you can love all of us, just give us equal attention." NOPE the men act like they're five years old. Naked girl wants to get into a bath with him? "WHATS WRONG PUT SOME CLOTHES ON PLEASE OMG".
Is actually a combination between tropes, almost all the MC are underage and to prevent japanese shippers getting a meltdown, because those fuckers are dangerous, also we dont want idiots getting ideas and large discussions about age of consent in anime forums, still the trope has been relegated hard in recent years i mean if you read things like Mushoku tensei the guy gets a harem and is show almost naturally, the story dont even end when he actually get a family and is show as a motivation for him doing his best for them, in Realist hero the protagonist also get laid and has a harem, and by now actually got one pregnant, this motivate him to rush the development of medical technology by making a alliance with another 2 kingdoms to make syringes and share knowledge about drugs and medicines

tl;dr is proven that MC getting laid dont ruin a good plot
