I mean, Shion wasn't introduced until the second arc. Makes sense she wouldn't be here in a similar Onikakushi-hen world. Honestly shocked they didn't throw her into the background of Angel Mort in episode three as a wink to the audience, they're just being so odd with this anime.
I want this to be good, I really do. I want to believe in this, but these strange decisions just aren't working due to how fucked the pacing is. It baffles me.
My main problem is that this is NOT a remake. Not at all. It is basically positioning itself as a SEQUEL. But except, it is behaving EXACTLY like a remake. You can't have BOTH. If you're saying that Rika already knows everything, why isn't Shion here?. At least the FF7 remake was categorically different. Not to mention it was attempting something completely separate. I can appreciate it. However, this is 99% identical excepting for maybe a minute and a half, which completely fucking spoils the entire plot of the original as well as its point.
What is really the point of going back and doing a 100% run of the first arc when its a time loop and Rika already achieved the best result possible? Like, there is no point in making this a sequel if you're going to follow the original most of the time. It isn't for new viewers, because you've completely spoiled the build up and pacing. For old viewers, we're waiting for you to get to the point. So it only serves to confuse new viewers and kill the tension for people who have already seen it by being a major retread of an arc that never actually happens in reality because of the time loop causality
I just don't see the point of fucking with your audience and then being a complete retread of what your audience has already seen. It seems like a really cheap shot. I thought after the second episode it would be totally from Rika's perspective. But...it isn't. It is still from Keiichi's perspective and as oldfags know everything Keiichi is seeing is a result of the parasite causing intense psychological symptoms, so none of it is real. Not to mention if it is going to be basically a sequel with 99% of things identical, you'd need 50 episodes. I mean, you could cut out some arcs.
Basically its me just watching this show going 'get to the fucking point, I know all this shit already'. And the problem is if it turns out to be different, I won't fucking know to be tense about it. Because the show has telegraphed basically nothing to indicate this will not be any different than the first arc. And I'm not really looking forward to retarded idiots doing Western bullshit 'mystery box' tricks worse than JJ Abrams or M. Night.
Yeah, its a time travel story. That does not justify tricking people into thinking its a remake when its actually a sequel and keeping a vast majority of the story identical. It is a shit marketing gimmick. I mean, unless they are going to somehow 100% ALL arcs of the original and cram them into one show where nobody dies or it is just deja vu'ed. Honestly, there's nothing here for old viewers as the 'remake' has already killed all tension and is honestly inferior to the original and the 'sequel' gives me absolutely nothing new.
Like it really is infuriating. For people who know what is going on, its basically trudging through episodes until we reach a point where something will be different and waiting for it.
It is odd, because DEEN nailed the pacing and Ryukishi is usually on point with it as well. I also thought the OP seeming to tease bits from Umineko was odd as well. There's only really a handful of connections, unless we're going to turn this into a witch's game.
The problem is Deen tried to do 'Its just a reamke guys' to 'HAHA JK ITS A SEQUEL' and then basically drained all tension out of the show completely by doing that. Because now all the old watchers know almost EXACTLY what is going on. And instead of Rika using all of her friends to overcome this challenge, believing in hope and fighting fate, she is now looking to do a 100% run all by her lonesome because she is an elite gamer. Its really fucking trash IMO.
I mean, we don't even get Rika's perspective! Its still all from Keiichi's view. Why did they even MAKE a sequel then? Because you've already wasted 3 episodes by being identical. So what, it isn't going to be different until episode 4 or 5? After you've wasted 1/5 of the season? What's the point? Or are you going to cram all the arcs in and basically just be a 'summary' or Higurashi with some new stuff to keep the old people interested?
I'm honestly not seeing the point of why this was made. It was a GIGANTIC mistake to spoil everything in the second episode. Like that is such a huge fuck-up.
This remake reads like something I'd find in fanficiton.net in 2011 while the visuals are modern monogatari but without the direction that makes it work
The problem is that it isn't really a remake, because it completely spoils the entire plot of Higurashi in the second episode. Rika basically says 'Yo, what happened, did I die? Nm, I been through this shit 100 years, I already know this shit, lets roll' So it isn't a remake. Not technically anyway. But it is.
I honestly don't know what to think with new Higurashi. Still need to watch ep. 3 for myself. I want this to be good or for there to be an actual swerve. They should have waited until further along to reveal the whole teen Rika/post Kai thing, even if their driving philosophy was tHe FaNs AlReAdY KnOw. Also, is Onidamashi-hen completely new or is it based on anything?
There's actually no swerve right now. It is basically still 99% identical, while basically mashing up episodes 3 and 4 from the original but still being behind where the original was at this point. Like there is very, very very little that is new. The only new thing is that nobody dies on the cotton drifting festival second night. They both just go missing. Also they don't find the double's body. Which is a very odd detail, which I think they honestly just forgot about. Apparently it is completely new. Which I don't really buy.
This project reeks of it being a remake but they wanted to do a 'twist' since it is a time travel story. I mean, its fucking meta in the sense if Rika is playing the VN, she's already played through it once and knows the entire plot and is now doing a solo run for the super duper good ending. Which...makes no fucking sense because nobody actually fucking dies and that good end was already achieved.
Which is why I'm questioning this entire project's existence. When they Cry was actually a complete story. It was done. Finito. Over. Why are we treading old ground? If you wanted to explore an older Rika, why aren't we doing that? Why are we treading water with nearly the identical plot of something that's 10+ years old? I just do not get their logic here. The original wasn't so fucking awful animation or drawing wise it needed this.
I hate creators that think we're stupid. Like if they keep the original endings to arcs, what the fuck is the point of the scene in the second episode? To sit through another 50 episodes which are 99% the same and we have to 'guess' the 1% difference? Because with that those endings there are no deaths. But if you keep those endings, there's no point to this being a sequel. Checkmate. They've played themselves.
And the thing is, we have SO MUCH to go and the series isn't picking up the pace, so it is hard to even say the new stuff will happen in the second cour. We might basically be stuck where we get a total of 20 minutes of new content and a 90% retread. And that's a really shitty thing to do. Because if you do that, just do a straight fucking remake. Don't trick people into thinking its a sequel and make us watch the same shit for essentially nothing new.
