Should I just read all Higurashi mangas? I have no shit towards what's happening, or is about to happen, but I have a feeling I'll like the mangas more. I also kinda don't wanna bother with going through all of the VN & other versions (I'll read about it, or watch some lore video on it).
I mean, you can read the manga. Just be aware the manga is 38 volumes, so there's a LOT there. You might just want to watch the 50 episodes of the series instead. You really don't need to worry about a lot of the other versions.
What would Higurashi 2020 have to do in order to be redeemed in your guys' eyes? Personally, believe they blew their load too early with Episode 2 but I'll hold any further judgement until Onikakushi-hen is finished.
Hrm. Its a major problem honestly. The thing is Rika gets killed the day after the cotton drifting festival so there is no time to cram in every other arc along with the first. And there's also the fact that we're already lagging behind the anime series as to where it originally was. Very little has changed.

Its very difficult for me to say what could redeem it at this point. Its already wasted 3 episodes and it looks like it is going to go through all of the arcs anyway meaning Rika fails even though she has 100% knowledge of what is going on. I feel like it is going to be 'Oh no! 1 really really minor thing changed and I have to go through all the arcs again!'. So it'll basically, fundamentally, be a complete remake. But for some reason, they didn't WANT to do a complete remake so added in a very, very sad excuse for new shit.

Like, just do your remake. Don't do both. If someone jumps into this right after watching Kai, they're going to be pissed because you've already wasted an hour of their time. A sequel needs to fit in with what the series already did. It doesn't. Its already killed its pacing, and for horror that is VERY difficult to get back. I'm not going to know that anything is different, so I don't know to be tense during these tense scenes. So basically, I am waiting to be told a week or two weeks from now to be 'tense'. That's a massive failure. So you've already wasted 1/5th of the series for old fans not knowing they should be tense and just royally confusing new fans with episode 2.

I honestly don't know what they would have to do to right this ship. In all honesty, they've already wasted a chunk of the series. So you've rendered 4 episodes pointless, at minimum. I don't see the logic of having 3 episodes be nearly 100% identical. Its a waste of time.
Keep in mind, for starters, that this is NOT Onikakushi-hen. The "next time" trailer at the end of ep. 2 revealed it's a completely new arc. I'd really wish they hadn't gone with "oh the fans already know" ethos and done a slow burn like the original. It's really just the pacing and that clunky reveal with older Rika and Hanyuu.
I do too. It has eviscerated the series for me. It is no longer tense or horrifying, I'm just waiting for the idiotic twist.

I've heard that the anime cuts out some of the development that the manga has.

I don't know why the anime cut out some important details outside of time constraints, but it didn't hurt the anime imho. Still do highly recommend reading the manga. Some of the mangaka actually do multiple arcs (and also return to work on Umineko's manga adaptations), but they all have their own unique vision of Higurashi.

Honestly, they could've really screwed things up by leaving shit out. Reunion and Yakusamashi-hen are a direct result of Ryukishi07 intervening and demanding DEEN include stuff from the original arcs that got left out.

For now, I think I'll just wait until the season ends to continue watching it and I'll just continue reading Umineko. Also, Umineko is really fucking good and captivating, which is suprising since I normally can't be bothered to sit through visual novels most of the time. Like hot damn, how do you make a conversation about inheritance interesting?

Is the new season of Osomatsu-san any good?

Reunion I think would've been its own episode anyway even though it's the true epilogue to Tsumihoroboshi-hen. It's most interesting they couldn't include it in the first season as the cliffhanger it was always meant to be, but it was smart to have DEEN start out Kai with Reunion and then the anime-original arc.

Now I wonder the "what ifs" if they had gone with a different studio than DEEN. How would they have approached it differently, I wonder, I wonder?

Got to see the new Lupin movie in theaters yesterday and it was pretty good. Fair warning, my opinion is from someone who only has basic knowledge of the series as I've yet to really watch much. Moving on to some of my thoughts:

-Animation was really good and I love how they made Lupin move, it felt very unique. It's animation was probably the best part.
-Characters were also a lot of fun, at least the non-movie original ones (They felt pretty bland) were great to watch. It really endeared me to the main lupin cast, I've no idea if they were acting out of character though, movie really came to life when all of them were together.
-Humor was also pretty great, I loved the ongoing gag of the Inspector appearing from no where screaming "LUPINNNN" with his faceless officers swarming out, which they actually tied into the main plot. I don't know if it was supposed to be funny but this one picture of old Hitler in a wheelchair made me laugh every time it showed up on screen.
-Story was pretty meh if I'm being honest, it was serviceable but nothing special. You could see plot points coming from a mile away so there were never many surprises.
-The English dub was pretty bad with a bunch of stilted dialogue which wasn't helped by how obviously off the lip sync was. It suffers from the same problem that the Akira dub does where the animation is so good that the lip sync doesn't work when dubbed over, probably Lupin movie would be more enjoyable subbed. I think the only voice I kind of liked was Fujiko because she really captured her playful nature portrayed in the movie, then again she didn't have that many lines which might have helped. Lupin I found kind of annoying.
-Music was pretty nice though I think they just use music from the series, like they play a movie specific version of the Lupin theme at multiple points.

I probably missed a bunch of easter eggs to the original series, I'd say that the movie definitely got me interested in checking out the series though I'll have to decide on my entry point. Would definitely say it's worth checking out if you have any local screenings or check out one of the various english subbed releases up on Nyaa.

EDIT: I forgot to talk about the story and didn't mention any of the points where I thought it was pretty questionable.
Is a pretty standard Nazis trying to find lost ancient technology to use, nothing groundbreaking going on there. There were several points in the movie that just felt weird and for the sake of plot.

One of the big ones was the main cast using this book which featured ciphers written in various ancient languages (ancient Hebrew, Akkadian, sumerian, etc.) which the movie original girl has no trouble reading all of them perfectly and when confronted by it just goes "Any archeologist could!". It felt like quite a cop out since I'd think most archeologists might at most know the language of their field of expertise if that, I doubt they'd know every ancient language well enough to immediately be able to read it without a guide. It would have been more believable if she was a Linguist that focused on ancient languages. I also don't know how well deciphered each languages was and if it was enough to actually write fully original sentences, especially factoring in that the diary was written in the 1940s or earlier. What would have made more sense to me is if she was able to read the phrases inside the diary due to the Professor having featured those phrases decoded in his book, the book which is noted near the beginning of the movie. For example, one chapter in the book might deal with his research on Akkadian and he uses that cipher sentence as a means to show how Akkadian worked as a language. There would be no need for her to unrealistically know all those languages and would make use of the whole "hiding in plain sight" theme by just having her know everything due to having re-read his book so many times (which they semi mention at the beginning).

Another big point was in the last half when the Nazis have the device and the Main girls adoptive grandfather starts ranting about "screw the nazis, this power is mine and I shall rule!" right in front of the big Nazi supporter he was collaborating with. At first I was wondering why Nazi guy just let him do his whole rant given how suave they'd made him seem and I thought he just didn't have a gun. He instead just starts throwing the old man around and when the main girl tries to get the device to self destruct during the chaos he finally decides to pull out the gun he's had for the entire time. I expected him to do the villain thing of shooting the professor as soon as he was shown how to operate the device with the whole "Your services are no longer required. I shall be the only one to receive the glory of giving this to the Fuhrer." since it's shown that every time they've interacted in the past he was obviously just using the professor.

To make matters more confusing, right as she's about to be shot the old Professor jumps in front and takes the bullet for her. I think they were trying to play the whole "even if he only adopted her to use her as a tool he still cared," yet the entire movie had him acting abusive towards her. It made no sense why he'd take a bullet for her.

Aren't the English dub voices the same voices from the newest series? (Most of which did the voices in the old Adult Swim dub?)
For the dub of the 2015 show? They're the same voice actors from the Geneon dub and are well-seasoned voice-actors. If they don't sound great in the new movie, that may be the fault of the ADR directors Michael Sinterniklaas and Stephanie Sheh and not just because they had to struggle to match the lip flaps (which was going to be inevitable tbh). Although if this was dubbed through home studios because of COVID lockdowns, that would've definitely hurt it.

My biggest problem was it felt like some lines needed another take, but they just went with the first go through instead. It was weird because sometimes Lupin sounded fine with a really fitting voice and then next line he'd sound weirdly stilted like he hadn't run through the line enough to get a good feel for how he should sound. Those lines just really stuck out to me, maybe there was also a problem of awkward dialogue that added to the stilted line delivery it sometimes had. While there might have been problems caused with lockdowns I think I'd direct my issue more towards the ADR directors.

Like, checking out some dub clips from the previous series they all seem to fit really well. Yet, I remember when walking out of the theater and talking with the people I saw it with they all kind of thought the dub was pretty meh at times and wished it was subbed.

Probably a stretch, but I have a feeling that the ADR directors just aren't used to directing something as fast-paced and wacky as Lupin III. This is their only Lupin III credit for anything, after all. I don't believe they're strangers to each other, least not between Sheh and the others, but the series is fast-paced more often than not and it's witty to boot (least the dub-script is, but the first series had its witty moments, too). They could've been rushing the dub for whatever reason when there was no need to, or they were just having a hard time keeping up with the voice-actors who are very familiar with their characters albeit not for CGI. Even the FUNimation dubs of the specials from the '90s work well despite a different cast, so who knows what was going on with NYAV Post (this movie is also the dubbing studio's first Lupin III production).

I'll get around to it one day to check it out for myself, I just want to watch some more of the TV series before then.

Umineko is a hell of an experience, although it's missing the community engagement these days. I picked it up just after the fan translation of the third one and the speculation was flying hot and heavy back in those days. I am tempted to put down my thoughts on the two biggest flaws I see in Umineko, but there's no good way to do that without absolutely massive spoilers and bitching about Ryukishi's pathological need to shock and horrify.

I'm always interested in people who haven't finished it giving their thoughts about who the culprit is after the 4th Episode. A certain part of the community insists it's obvious. I think they're full of shit, but I thought that since the 3rd Episode.

Ah, Episode 2. The Rosa Musou ending with Worldend Dominator playing. I think it was 2 or 3 am when I got to it, which is the perfect time to play Umineko. Of all of the adults, Rosa's the saddest. The rest are mostly just assholes, but Rosa's just broken.

Yeah my personal opinion of Rosa went completely up in this episode. The parts where she yells at and hits Maria were hard to read. That part cut deep for some reason. Also, how am I supposed to be scared of the big scary witch when the OST GOES SO FUCKING HARD? I'm afraid to share any music out of the fear of spoilers, but there's some gold here.

Just wait until the end of Ep. 4. Since it's the end of the "question" arcs, it goes hard with a suitable soundtrack. In theory, you should be able to figure out who the culprit is by then, but I have my doubts. God knows the community didn't have it right, except the ones that were sorta right by coincidence.
