I kinda wonder, if it's good idea to bring here some classics right now.
Like for example Kaze to Ki no Uta, coz I haven't seen it mentioned on farms. Has somebody here watched or read it?
If you did, what are your opinions about it?
I've been considering trying it out cause it's apparently one of the earliest BL manga out there, but I also heard it's depressing so I'd have to be in the mood to get depressed.

thoughts on stuff i'm watching this season

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? S3
so far much stronger then S2 IMO. it's still typical isekai fare so if you like that you'll like this season if you don't like that there isn't anything to really sell you on.

Majo no Tabitabi

probably most comparable to Kino's Journey. like anything in that style of show (each episode being a self contained short story) it's dependent on how good the writing is for the episode. so far good but not great. i'm enjoying it but it has the problem a lot of those shows have that it doesn't give the stories enough time to be developed so when they go for something that is suppose to have emotional impacted it tends to fall flat

Kami-tachi ni Hirowareta Otoko
isekai trash, i am trash and like isekai trash but this one pushes it even for me. i'll still watch that shit though

Maoujou de Oyasumi
novelty premise comedy about a princess trapped in a demon lords castle trying to get some sleep. the premise hasn't worn out it's welcome for me. the writing is silly and pretty creative. comfy show

Assault Lily: Bouquet
only watched because it's Shaft but pleasantly surprised. it's basically a darker, better written, version of Strike Witches aimed at maid+thigh enthusiasts (me)

Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear

Cute Girl Cute Thing isekai, if you're a fan of Biofuri or Hamefura i'd jump on this it has very simular vibes. enjoying it a lot but hard to recommend to people cause in a genre that many aren't crazy about

I read this when it was by Snapesnogger in 2007. Which is to say, I haven't, but the synopsis reads like bad fanfic, as is the case with most of the classic faggotry I've seen (edit: seen as in "aware of", not "watched"). Rape, slavery, magical rape, incest, stepsibling incest, forced feminization, absurd fictional mental illnesses.

For comparison, a Kiwi in the Unpopular thread dropped Tezuka's Kirihito Senka because of how fucked up it is, and you know what the premise of Tezuka's supposedly most fucked-up work is? "I am a closeted gay man and the guy I used to screw became a terrorist". See how NORMAL it is? The fuck is wrong with wamen.

These are the only two I'm watching this season so far.

Danmachi S3 certainly feels better and more story driving than S2, It felt like they didn't do much of really driving the overarching plot, and I felt like the first half of the second season was way too rushed. This season's plot, so far at least, feels like it drives the world more already than all of S2.

I'm enjoying how unexpectedly dark some of the episodes are in Tabitabi, but that should be something you'd expect in a world with basically freeform magic, complete and utter chaos. I agree that the story feels fairly disjointed since everything is very episodic, and the multi-year jumps between some stories can be jarring. I can't get over how absolutely beautiful every scene in that show is though, and can't praise the visuals enough.

You've sold me enough to want to check it out with just that short description.

For those unaware, Mitsuboshi Colors ended their manga series almost a week ago. I remember watching the anime a couple of years ago, and I thought it was sweet. It reminded me of a mix between Non Non Biyori and Ichigo Mashimaro, and I never got around to reading the manga series for it at the time.

To be fair, I’ve admittedly have done this to some anime series in the past, but now that this has ended, I’ll be sure to check out the manga version for this from the beginning. It’s a really good anime.

I've not seen/read that series myself but I am familiar with the author being a part of the Year 24 group and the members of that certainly have many classics worth reading among them. It also reminds me that the author also wrote Towards the Terra, a series I've tried to watch the anime (own it along with the movie when rightstuf sold it as a cheap bundle) for multiple times but have never gotten around to finishing due to scheduling problems with the one I've been trying to watch it with. Series features one of my favorite openings:

I think one of the problems with trying to get into early classics is that a lot just isn't translated and the art styles popular in those works also seem to turn off many readers. Some works get lucky and receive attention, Riyoko Ikeda's Rose of Versailles being an example, but so many others don't. Even then, the kind of people that actually get into those classic titles are probably a small section of the total anime community and it can be hard to even figure out what's out there translated.

I've found that probably the best way to find out about classics and finding people to talk about them is keeping an eye on the Pre-2000s anime thread that frequently shows up on /a/ since not only does it tell you what's out there but also if a series has been subbed. When a new classic series starts getting a sub group translating it there's usually a post in thread mentioning it. There's similar discussion on /m/ but it's focused on obscure mecha anime or Toku shows which I think has an even smaller level of interest for many.

Higurashi's "Watadamashi-hen" is so far adapting the "Cotton-Drifting" chapter rather accurately minus Keiichi calling in the gang to get back at the otaku in Angel Mort. The Mion split-personality theory is bust, which I expected since it was too cool of an idea to go through with this show. Honestly am still not feeling it with the anime, the timing of the music I think is throwing me off since they're just reusing the 2006 soundtrack and the moments some tracks play in come off as being wrong to me.

Shion I think will still be the antagonist of the arc, and I bet her reasoning for going insane is her jealousy towards Mion. She clearly still wanted the same doll Mion ended up keeping in this arc, so unless she's teasing Keiichi over a growing crush on her sister, I think she's trying to take Keiichi away from Mion. Mion still has a chance at snapping, but I'm not going to hold my breath over it.

Since they ended the episode on Keiichi and Shion deciding to go into the storehouse, I think they're going to do a full exposition dump for the next episode like in the sound novel. The 2006 anime cut things down due to time, but they were in the storehouse for quite a while as Takano tells stories about the history of Onigafushi Village and the mingling of man-eating demons and humans, and even going more into detail about the symbolism behind the festival in them being a carryover from the old practices of demoning away selected people to eat them. She even showed a newspaper clipping from the Meiji era about a mutilated, disemboweled corpse being found to support her theory.

I do wish they'd have put in things from the TIPS, though.

I wish I had the ability to show this (thanks for shitting the bed, laptop), but I was having a "You kidding me?" moment at the animation shot of the trees blowing in the wind at the shrine. They clearly just warped the treetops with the puppet pin tool, it's really jarring and lazy and looks stupid. For all the effort Passione put in updating the graphics, they sure as hell still animate like they're DEEN.

Also I just noticed this because I was distracted by the pretty art in the end credits, but what are the Fate people doing that they're being giving special thanks? Are they giving advice or what?

I never got around to watching the Mitsuboshi Colors anime (which was produced at Silver Link, the same studio as the Non Non Biyori anime) but the Mitsuboshi Colors manga is also comparable to Yotsuba & ! in that adults are major supporting characters, unlike Ichigo Mashimaro (where the only recurring adult characters, if you don't count Nobue, who is a high school girl in the manga, are a couple of nameless teachers and that one old man from the restaurant plus only short glimpses of Ana's mother) and, to a lesser degree, Non Non Biyori (where you only ever see one parent, Yukiko Koshigaya, Natsumi, Komari, and Suguru's mother, and Renge's much older sister and the only teacher, Kazuho Miyauchi, plus Kaede Kagayama at the candy store, who is barely out of her teen years, although later manga volumes have introduced a policeman and his wife, who are the parents of Shiori, a girl who is younger than Renge).

EDIT: I forgot that you see both of Hotaru Ichijo's parents as well in Non Non Biyori but they don't have anywhere near the screentime of Yukiko Koshigaya or Kazuho Miyauchi.

You say that but hasn't Go nagai been writing degenerate shit with homoerotic undertones since the 70s?

Go Nagai is credited as being the creator of modern erotica manga with the popularity of his first work Harenchi Gakuen which is seen as the first modern ecchi manga. He got into a lot of battles with Japanese PTAs going after his work which went on to influence the ending of Harenchi Gakuen:
The protests were not only against the manga, but also against the TV series. The PTA managed to prevent the distribution of the magazine in some parts of Japan.[18] As a result of the protests, when the series was about to be cancelled because of the PTA, Nagai changed the theme in Harenchi Gakuen into a more mature and serious matter, from nonsense gags with sexy touches, to a full-scale war where murder was depicted in the bloody way for which many know him. This led to the famous ending of Harenchi Gakuen, symbol of freedom and of rejection of the hypocrisy, where all students and teachers, while defending their freedom of expression, are killed by the PTA and other parental forces. This was the ironic answer that Nagai gave to the PTA. (In the end, this was not the actual ending of Harenchi Gakuen, as the title would subsequently return to publication for several years.)[18]
Which then went on to influence his next work Gakuen Taikutsu Otoko (very fun short read) which focused on violent clashes between youth and adults in a mad max school setting. His later works were also full of gory and sex, probably more so than his earlier works, with stuff like Violence Jack or Devilman lady. I always find Go Nagai works highly entertaining to read, like a good 80s slasher film, even if they wouldn't be considered much more than schlock by others.

A lot of his more popular works have a strong fujo population and shipping going on in them, lots of new fanart is always coming out though it seems to mostly be for the bigger titles associated with Go Nagai (even if it technically isn't his work). Interesting for works where they do have proper heroines like Mazinger Z with Sayaka or Devilman with Miki, yet a lot of the fan art is Kouji/Tetsuya (which is also the case for their SKL counterparts) and Akira/Ryo.

Honestly, some of the shipping can just be attributed to them being mecha titles as homoerotic undertones is pretty much a staple of the genre at this point. It's so prevalent that /m/ specifically made troll recommendation charts for both girl and guy erotic undertones with out of context screenshots from popular series:

Well, if you haven't watched Mahouka yet Tatsuya gets the sasuga oniisama treatment and is basically Jesus. There's also the classic Jesus Yamato with Gundam Seed, original dub adds to the charm with some over-the-top performances. Cross Ange is also one of those trashy anime that is a 10/10 in entertainment, you have to go through a couple episodes of whiny Ange but she evolves into an OP MC that doesn't give a single fuck. I haven't watched it through myself but Hagure Yuusha no Estetica probably also counts.
e7b80334b85b3b2d036b6c5c1dc3c5ab766f9ea1_00.gif

Some stuff that I wouldn't consider trash but more "Highly fun shows with OP MC".
  • Drifters and Hellsing OVA - If you like one you'll like the other since it's the same author, would recommend the dub for Hellsing since they actually make an effort with proper accents.
  • Crusher Joe Movie - Fun space romp with an entertaining cast, it's nothing amazingly deep but it's a fun time.
  • Getter Robo Armageddon OVA - I don't think you need any knowledge of the Getter series to enjoy it, pretty short too.
  • Most of the modern Mazinger stuff - Stuff like Shin Mazinger Z (Has some great openings that hype you up), Mazinkaiser, and Mazinkaiser SKL (The opening makes me laugh with how edgy/metal it is). Would just warn that if you do end up checking them out don't watch them back to back, I read through the manga then marathoned through all the series and there was a lot of plot overlap.
I realize most of my recommendations are mecha but it's the genre I find has the most "turn your brain off and enjoy" series that get your blood pumping with hot-blooded mecha combat. MC is also typically OP due to having the special suit that steamrolls over most enemies.
