Sailor Moon was my very first anime I watched when I was a kid and I've got a lot of nostalgia for it, along with Digimon and Cardcaptors.

That's part of why I've been using Sailor Mercury as my avatar lately and the other part is semi-related to the GameStop stock market insanity.

So yeah, what are some old-school anime and manga (before 2007) that you like a lot?
While I haven't seen much, Hell Teacher Nube is SUPER good. My personal pics for old school animes would be YuGiOh! Toei series, YuGiOh! Duel Monsters (my all time fave tbh) FMA 2003, Nerima Daikon Brothers, Cromarite HighSchool, Berserk 1998 (the best shit next to the 3 movies which I liked alot tbh) Sailor Moon, and Golden Boy. I know i've seen more old school stuff but I cannot remember to save my life rn.
This kind of shit just makes me wish for the death of the western anime scene ala the anime crash in the 2000s. Everything is so pozzed and filled with SJWisms that it makes it impossible to read "official" sources without it coming off as altered.

FUNImation being owned by Sony and now having purchased Crunchyroll has become an unkillable juggernaut that has a defacto monopoly on the western market for blu-rays and streaming. The only company that could likely compete, for streaming anyway, would be Netflix but they were proud of running that pedo trash Cuties and are no better.

This is why you should just pirate everything and rely on fan translations, or just learn weebspeak yourself.
Don't get me STARTED on the blu-rays god I hate em. Call me an old ass idc, but I don't have a blu-ray player. I see no reason to own one if I have a fucking PS4. Even then, I still use my PS4 for games and I sail the 7 seas to watch shit. I haven't bought anime in a few years mainly BECAUSE of the blu-ray shit. Funi loves to put half a season on, make you pay $44-$60 (depending where you buy), other half for like $38-$50 only for them to put OBNOXIOUS stickers like this on there. Ironically, this BNHA movie, its like $15 on the blu-ray, but on the shelf behind me when you go further down it was like $10 on basic ass dvd. I give them another few months before they throw all of Demon Slayer or BNHA S4 on a "complete edition" blu-ray. I remember when anime series came in those nice chunky display boxes, and you had the option to buy basic or blu-ray. Thanks Funi.

bTW, They sell Vietnam or Taiwaneese dvd's of animes like Kaiji, YuGiOh!, or Bungou Stray Dogs for example on ebay if anyone is curious, but even if it's $10 I don't recommend it. The subs are horribly inaccurate, or just straight up missing.

And in case you wanted more Black Clover news (it keeps happening), they put out an announcement today that the anime will wrap up with episode 170 on March 30th, with a special announcement immediately following (a movie?). I don't know exactly where the anime's at since I haven't read the manga, but I'm guessing it'll be wrapping up the current arc. Presumably the anime's going on hiatus so they don't have to keep putting out filler, even if the filler's still pretty entertaining overall. Still, if it ends up going seasonal, that probably won't be a bad thing; they can use their budget more effectively and reduce the QUALITY moments, and the pacing should improve. If you're watching the dub, then assuming no further coof delays, it should run through October or November.
The thing is Black Clover the show has now caught up to Black Clover the manga. So there's really nothing else they can do for the moment. So its ending probably for now. Black Clover is HUGELY popular on TV in Japan, so I feel like it isn't cancelled outright. It will probably wrap up the current arc and basically just go inactive for 2 years so there's another arc they can do or if the manga finishes, a movie.

Welcome to the Blu-ray hate club! Now I'm gonna pirate all releases I wanted to buy, I hope you're happy with losing a dedicated customer who bought loads of DVD anime content over the years, companies. Choke on that Blu-ray fad and die, please.

Don't buy anything Viet, Malaysian, Chinese or Taiwanese - they are all pirated. Speaking from experience.

As a reader of the manga, it looks like the anime will be ending at what basically is the end of act 1 of the current arc.

Started watching Strawberry Panic and its been a blast so far, just the right level of over reaction to mild drama with a fun cast of characters. It's exactly what I was hoping for it to be from reading people talk about it. In one of the episodes they even had gay piano playing ala Eva 3.0 between Nagisa and Shizuma, somewhat wondering if this is a long standing trope that both series took from or Eva 3.0 got inspired from here.

You want boring and hard to watch, go watch Gasaraki.
I still remember watching the first several episodes a long time ago at an anime con because I had time before going to the next panel I was interested in. By the end of the second episode the only people still in the room were my dad and I (along with the staff member) but that was only because my dad had fallen asleep and I didn't want to wake him up. Don't actually remember anything about the show besides there being a lot of talking.

I like the idea of Blurays, far more protected from scratches than DVDs, take less space, and able to hold a lot more information, but the pricing on them is sometimes ridiculous. Anime is expensive in Canada when looking at how long of a series you actually get for the price, made double pricey when they release a series in chunks, so I'll usually hold off until they do those full collections or I can find it for cheap second-hand/on sale.

It super sucks trying to collect all the Gundam stuff since most of the series are in parts and getting just one series is over 100 bucks (specifically if I bought just 0079 off rightstuf it'd be 144 bucks CAD). The price has basically made it so that I'm only going to get my absolute favorite series on Bluray and just keep the old DVDs I have for the rest, except for stuff like Seed with the garbage redub and the original release locked behind a stupid limited edition. Not even taking into consideration any aniplex of america releases since the region b variations are so much cheaper.

I don't think I'd mind the price as much if they put the same care that a lot of boutique bluray labels put into their releases. The price for all those are super high (when not bought on sale), but the amount of care makes it feel worth it and typically each release feels like the definitive copy of said film. Like a criterion bluray is 50 bucks (roughly 30 bucks on sale) but it comes with a nice transfer, tons of extras, and a very nice case that pretty much guarantees I'm not buying another copy of that movie afterwards. In comparison, a lot of bluray anime releases feel quite barren feature wise, possibly having terrible transfers/encoding, with cheap looking and flimsy packaging.

Watch for Amazon warehouse deals because I picked up both parts of demon slayer for 20 bucks each that way.

But yeah people wishing for an ADV type crash may have to wait a long time
statistics.jpg

ADV went under because they kept putting out series that nobody wanted. Here we have an instance where they're thinking of cross pollinating to get an even larger audience.

You also have the fact that any merch sale or whatever platform you're watching the show on, sony gets a cut. Streaming services are an incestious mess, Biggest competitor to Netflix is Amazon Prime Video and Amazon is the one who hosts all the servers for Netflix. Without Amazon, netflix wouldn't exist.

I bought several anime Blu-Rays last year and didn't pay too much, even for the Blu's I ordered from Robert's Anime Corner Store in the States. Even the cost of shipping was reasonable if you're like me and don't mind waiting a week or two.

Then again, I pretty much only watch single-cour shows and not longer-running series. I have some longer older anime series on DVD and the DVDs are, for the most part, fine for shows that were animated for standard definition anyway. I probably should buy those Viz boxes of Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon R eventually considering the abysmal quality of the old ADV releases but I could see myself just replacing DVD with other DVDs.

It's mainly due to lacking a good range of places to check for deals, there aren't that many places that actually sell anime up North and buying from American sites with the current conversion rates + shipping usually negates the deal. *sigh*

Nowadays I try to just aim for blurays since in my mind it's the last time I'll need to get it, no interest in the 4k trend, while with DVDs I'll be worried about a bluray release just being straight up better. It doesn't mean I'm always looking to upgrade since sometimes an old DVD is good enough or maybe it's unlikely to ever get a bluray. There's also certain release that I still buy the DVDs for if I know that the bluray is really bad or isn't that much of an upgrade, but that's rare.

It's not a super big worry for most anime, but it's a bleed over from my collecting of old films where new transfers are a big deal because a good one can just blow your socks of with how good something from the 30s-50s can look. Anime releases you have to worry more about bad encoding, though with older series it's still important to see if a new release will come with a new restoration like what was seen with the rightstuf release of G Gundam.

I'm just saying, if you wait for sales and don't pay extra for express shipping, it's often still cheaper to order anime physical media online from American stores than it is to buy anime from Amazon Canada.

I did use to buy anime locally but the one anime store in my area stopped selling anime in 2019 and HMV, which did use to carry a surprising amount of niche anime, closed a few years before that. I'm happy that Sunrise Records bought up much of HMV Canada's operations to still give me offline physical media-buying options beyond Walmart (which does get some anime, but mainly films distributed by GKids) and the occasional indie record store but Sunrise still doesn't have the variety of anime HMV had.

I know I've been eyeing saving up some of my entertainment budget to make a big purchase off rightstuf come their summer sale to make it past the free shipping threshold. Being region free I've started looking into the cheaper region b releases, they're sometimes a lot cheaper than what's released here and sometimes they get stuff that's never seen a region a release.

I've found that for local stuff Best Buy is pretty interesting since they seem to use none converted US prices for their anime, even if it's a very limited selection, way cheaper than most other places. No idea why, as an example Escaflowne is listed on their site about 10 bucks cheaper than what's listed on rightstuf which is in USD.

As someone who reads the manga, I know where this'll end. But I know that it'll inevitably return, it's very famous in Japan. There'll either be a movie (I actually hope not tbh), or it'll go seasonal, which'll be pretty good for the animators, cause they'll get an actual for the first time in years (that 2 month hiatus doesn't count).

Back on the subject of old school anime, me and the wife have begun watching the Ranma 1/2 anime. I had precious experience with the manga, having read it when I was younger, and remembered that I liked it. So I yar-harred the entire series (Viz ain't getting my money) and am currently at episode 13. A long way to go, but I'm enjoying it so far.
I bought half the books a decade ago, and had to piece my collection together with books from a particular pressing. The ending was worth the wait, though.

Edit to remove double post:
Azumanga Daioh is still the best Slice of Life/CGDCT anime out there and nothing comes close to it.

I know this is a little late but here goes: Galaxy Express 999, Lupin the III, Cutie Honey, Chargeman Ken (in a so bad that's good kind of way), Speed Racer, Sailor Moon, Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Elfen Lied, etc.

I have others that I've seen and liked but I can't name them off of the top of my head.

I forgot to talk about it, last episode of Spider was great and made up for the boring previous episode. A great mob battle where the heroine is threatened by every hit (and puts the level up restoration for the full effect).

I just barely started the next episode of Higurashi Gou, but I have to pause it here so I can point and laugh at the bad art direction. "Festival-Accompanying" spoilers btw.

LOL, she got her dress dirty, that doesn't mean anything, Tomitake.

This is how DEEN did it back in 2007.
