I first heard of the Carmen Sandiego allegations here:
Yeah, studios can do some pretty scummy shit in the name of keeping costs down. Hell, the stories about the shit the Canadian studio that animated Seth Rogen's Sausage Party broke out into the mainstream. And what happened afterwards? NOTHING! Not only did the guy in charge, Greg Tiernan, suffer no lasting harm to his reputation, he got to do an Addams Family movie three years later, and is even attached to its sequel. Sometimes, there's just no justice.

And that's why the comparisons between the Anime industry and the VFX industry seem so apt. They both overwork their employees while not paying them enough. The only difference I noticed is that the VFX industry doesn't work their people to death (yet).

Another similarity is they also get shafted for their hard work. See: The Life of Pi (Sausage Party was already mentioned) and how Rhythm and Hues Studio was treated like shit by everyone including the Academy (despite winning the Oscar).

I can tell you right now that if the horror stories of working on Carmen Sandiego are accurate with regards to low pay, then the situation with Anime is probably not much better.

no point in going outside japan unless it's cheaper (or better quality for the same price, but unlikely). it's the same in any industry.

Kaguya-sama is the best example of these, the fandom genuinely loathes the official release of the manga to the point that there are at least 7 scanlators teams on the manga.

out of curiosity, what's the issue with the official release? poor print quality/book or just the format?

I always had an aversion to buying manga cause if you were to buy every little thing you have a passing interest in to see what it's like you'd end up with a giant pile of paper taking up space in your home, but hearing all this stuff with loclisation issues makes me feel even more justified with not bothering.

unironically the way to go would be pay the scanlators a bit for their effort, pay the author more directly to produce more content. some patreons already make crazy cash, there are absolutely enough people willing to throw money at their entertainment. and it gets even crazier when it comes to smut.

the only way to do it right now would be to fly around the world to buy their stuff at comicket (never mind corona), but that would completely nuke the cost/benefit. and japan catching up digitally in that regard is gonna take a while.

I haven't really noticed many glaring flaws in my printed collection, but through years of reading terrible fan translations I've gotten used to kind of skimming the text and filling in the missing grammar/words/awkward sentences as I go. There's probably a lot of mistakes I'm not seeing based on auto-correcting it in my head, though garbage typesetting still stands out when they don't bother to properly fit text into boxes.

That's also one of my major aversions to buying every single thing I have an interesting in, it just adds up to way too much especially if you have other collecting interests to juggle. I end up just collecting my absolute favorites or stuff that doesn't really have an online version.

It doesn't help that pricing on them is somewhat ridiculous at times for what you get, especially when the book itself is super skinny yet uses the same pricing as their normal sized ones or in some cases is more expensive. A lot of it doesn't feel worth the price tag and they don't typically come with any bonus content nor color pages to justify the cost. I can understand, at least somewhat, the cost of american comics since they're normally full color on nicer paper with goodies in the back (unreleased sketches, interviews, cover collections, etc.). I wouldn't mind paying the high price for manga if they actually made them feel worth it through presentation or extras.

Having said that, I give a lot more lenience to publishers like Drawn & Quarterly or Fantagraphics because they typically focus on bringing over series that I doubt most of the other big names would touch and are almost always very nice releases that can justify the higher price tag. Dark Horse also seems to be attempting to move towards the more higher quality release ideas with their massive Berserk and Hellsing books. I think Vertical has also been dipping their toes in the idea, though I haven't bought much from them past Gundam Origin which seemed outside the norm.

It's really just not that practical to collect english manga. $10 a book REALLY starts adding up when most manga run over 20 volumes, box sets are uncommon so you're stuck hunting down volumes individually without that box set discount, and of course as mentioned you have to contend with questionable translations. I read the official translation of JJK and they don't even keep the terminology consistent, arbitrarily switching between localized English and untranslated Japanese for the technical terms. It's especially bad because JJK already uses a bunch of similar-sounding terms to refer to distinct technical concepts and has a lot of panels where characters break down how they're applying their powers, and the inconsistent terminology made me give up on trying to understand the rules of its magic system.

It's a shame because I genuinely do prefer reading on paper, but there's no way I'm going to buy every series I'm interested in reading. I think the Western manga industry would be a tiny fraction of its current size if the vast majority of readers weren't reading scanlations to begin with.

Or how companies like Technicolor lay off their employees for "cost" when in reality they're trying to move things to cheaper countries.

And that's why thrift stores are your best friends. ;)👌 I got myself a sizable collection, and I believe half if not more of them are used or were gifts (Tokyopop's older releases force you to go to used, for instance).

I gave up on getting physical copies to read but I did want to buy some I guess for the collection value when I was in Japan so I used the last of the physical yen I had and got Jojo part 6. They're all still wrapped in plastic but I'll likely keep them that way.

Not yet, but that's likely going to be the conclusion of Gou.
That's fucking retarded. If they go that way Gou is officially non-canon to me

EDIT: Saw the scene with Satoko and Featherine on r/higurashi.

LAMBDA WAS NEVER FEATHERINE'S MIKO!!! She mentioned being caught in a logic error of her own, but no hint of a Higurashi tie or Auaurora! She was a player on the Hinamizawa board and made child Takano her piece when she was yelling at god after fleeing the orphanage! Fuck me, isn't Ryukishi directly involved? How are we shitting the bed like this?

I only hope we can get a good, full Umineko adaptation out of this. Fuck.
