Opie has his issues but he was able to straighten Anthony out for a huge period of time and make a large footprint in the world of radio and comedy.

There was one a time where Anthony could get through an entire day without saying "black", "nigger", or "fuck" on the radio if you can imagine it.

It's really annoying to listen to old O&A bits and hear Opie stomp all over them with awful jokes or try to change the subject. But all you have to do is listen to one episode of TACS or Jim & Sam and it becomes blatantly clear how much that structure was needed.

Exactly. I hated when the O&A sub would do an Opie kayfabe pivot, it started ironically praising him to piss off Ant but then people would genuinely say he was a great professional. All these niggas were hack, there's a reason nobody listened to their serious interviews.

Opie was good when the shock jock era was a thing. Then people grew out of it and he just wasn't able to offer much to the show that had evolved past it.

I'm not saying he's a good radio guy, especially not now. I generally avoid all of the shows now just because they aren't very good to me. Frankly I find myself sifting through reruns/bestofs before I can listen to anything from The Compound, Sam Roberts, or Jim Norton.

I was listening to the latest Who Are these Podcasts episode and the host is under the impression that Carl Ruiz's business venture is in trouble and he might have to close down the restaurant and Opie is hoping that it's true so that he can rope Carl into doing his podcast with him full time. Poor talentless Opie, still trying to capture lightning in a bottle once more despite the fact that nobody wants to work with him.

Opie (and Anthony's) current state of affairs make me think about what Patrice O’Neal said about fame and the entertainment industry.

Opie wont be podcasting with Carl anymore since Carl is dead now. He actually died the day you made your post.

By the way, Opie's podcast is only worth listening to if Carl is on it. In fact, he's the only reason why I listen to it. Smart and funny fucker that Ruiz guy was. Brilliant chef too (he won a bunch of Food Network shit back in the day). Carl has the best stories too and he's an absolute animal. I'd say he's on the level of Patrice in terms of knowledge of how shit works in the world, but can also throw in the random cooking fact now and again.

I wouldn't say they were humorless before the show. Opie didn't just invite two random, humorless nobodies to do a show with him.

The split did take the wind outta their sails. Jim and Ant were comedians, not "hosts". They needed an intermediary, a "straight man", to separate them from the boring stuff (introductions and transitions of new topics, and the like) so that they could bring the funny. Ope was right that his purpose was to "steer the ship" (but he incorrectly assumed that he fulfilled his role well).

They didn't even have to feel once removed from the boring stuff, but were twice removed. Opie and Ant could carry a conversation with Jim only occasionally dropping lines. The Jim and Sam Show could've hypothetically worked with Jim having his "straight man", but it still couldn't be the same Jim because he was now a co-host, one role removed from the funny.

Something simple I haven't seen touched on is that these are old guys that've been pushed into a new setup after their formula for years and years. Maybe they're just too tired to build up again from scratch

To be 100% fair, Anthony wasn't humorless (although a comedy cover band is kind of cringe) when he started with Opie - but he was absolutely a nobody at the time. Jim Norton (when he joined the show as a guest) wasn't exactly a nobody, but he wasn't a well known comic and was regarded as an "opener" and not a "headliner" and was brought on as part of Andrew Dice Clay's entourage - not even brought on directly.

Opie (and Jim, to an extent) are too tired to build up from scratch and are seemingly content to ride the "old radio" concept all the way into the ground. Jim would likely do a radio show with literal homeless people if SiriusXM paid him to do it and Opie seems content to take any gig that contains the word "radio".

Anthony, unsurpsingly, was very smart about changing the forumula and format of his content. He built his own company, studio, AND focuses on live/video content with a subscription model which is something that a lot of other content creators (aka Youtubers/Streamers/etc) still haven't done nearly a decade later. However, while Anthony is very much regarded as the "funny" one - he is dogshit at running a business, is a horrendous host, and has no sense of how to identify or handle staffing issues.

Ironically, if Opie and Anthony were still friends/partners, Opie would be exactly the type of person who could run Compound Media correctly and if they stuck together they might be finding success in new media (like Joe Rogan) instead of dying slow, embarassing deaths by themselves.
