It's got to be attended to at all times to supply power to the grid and to prevent another Chernobyl incident, so there's not much time for a renovation or an installation crew to come in and change the control system. In fact, there's no time! Layer on top of that industry standards and you get much the same design that went live 50 years ago.

CANDU reactors are pretty fucking awesome from the control rooms all the way down to the core blocks. The 3rd generation CANDU-6 and prospective 4th gen designs are incredibly effecient, scalable from the low megawatt to high gigawatt ranges, can use natural or just barely (1%) enriched Uranium for fuel, and most important of all, capable of utilizing natural Thorium to breed it's own fuel for damn near forever, and Thorium is not only 3x more abundant in the Earth's crust, but both Canada and the U.S. have absolute shitloads of it in the midwest. It breeds U-233 instead of Plutonium so less weapons proliferation risk, etc. etc.

Canadian nuclear power plants are just pretty badass overall.
