If Kim Jong-Il were still around, North Korea would have similarly-coloured power plants, but all done in pastel colour schemes.

Almost everything in Japan is a superior version of what can be found elsewhere, they even manage to make industrial zones look far more pleasing to the eye than they tend to be elsewhere, like these nuclear power plants as a great example.

It's really incredible when you think about how next level Japan is.

Of course that perfectionism has it's price and a lot of people sadly snap under the pressure, but it's still impressive that there's a culture in the world that doesn't do anything halfway.

Meanwhile, the Russians can't be assed to make their shit last. Chernobyl was a by-product of an dick-waving contest

Fukushima was built to handle an earthquake that powerful and a tsunami that large, but not both one right after the other

Shit was an engineering marvel and what happened wasn't because they did a shitty job designing or building it
So maybe it wasn't a particularly excellent idea to build it on top of a fault line directly next to the ocean.

I don't think it was built on top a fault line? Not extremely far away from fault lines, they're all over the place in Japan, but I don't think basically right over one. The epicenter of the earthquake was a little over 46 and a half miles from the Daiichi plant. That earthquake was big enough that it moved the island of Honshu 8 feet. Tepco had power plants closer to the epicenter that got tsunamis just as bad but they had stronger seawalls and didn't go boom. They would have had a big but manageable problem at Fukushima if they'd upgraded their seawalls from good enough for everything but the worst to good enough for everything like they'd done elsewhere. The earthquake weakened the seawalls more than other places.
