What is an apology?

When does an apology become insincere? Naturally when a person continues doing the thing they're apologizing for, right? Well then, what about when they know that nobody buys their apologies anymore & they continue apologizing ad nauseam? What does an apology mean to this person? Do they really think it's a free "get out of jail" card? Do they mean it? What do they mean by it? Are they simply trying to dodge responsibility or confessing they can't take responsibility?

An apology stops becoming sincere when the person quits making an effort to change.

I wouldn't count making the same mistake over and over again as a reason for an apology for not being sincere because people fuck up, a lot, it's part of being human, but they have to make an effort to learn from their mistake.

The main requirement is guilt, are they genurally sorry, or just trying to manipulate you into forgetting about the situation and ease your insecurities without planning to make an effort to change?

This. All of this. Well said, @Wildchild.

I think apologies have to be analyzed within their context. "I'm sorry" doesn't always get used for its "face value" meaning, kinda like "I love you".

An apology implies a promise not to do the same thing again. I don't apologize for something unless I think I was in the wrong. I certainly won't apologize for something I felt was entirely justified and that I would do again.

I would say that an apology can be analyzed semantically as being essentially a promise to not perform the action again. Performing an action in repentence is showing off that you are willing to take a disincentive for committing the action again.
