I actually don't think it's that many at the moment. I was looking at a 2018 report and only 13% of players use PC and 8% mobile phones. The rest are consoles.

My Tyler McVicker speculative bullshit™ as to why Tim is doing this: I think Tim is starting to see the writing on the wall and preparing for the end or significant reduction in users in the console market. He is trying to secure a future market based mostly on PC's and mobile, which he cannot monopolize if a third of the former and 100% of the latter continues to be a walled gardens.

consoles will never die, for the simple reason tablets/phones aren't a replacement and no significant other/parent will allow a full blown pc in the living room.
you could get to a point where you could hook up your phone to a tv, but good luck getting 4k + raytracing out of that. sure, the switch doesn't either, but a) that's nintendo, so comes with it's own expectations, and b) if everyone's doing it it's nothing special anymore, so nintendo would still win by default.

the other point would be streaming, but even if we get everyone fibre glass for cheap (lul good luck with everything slowly turning to shit) it still won't beat the physical limitations.

normies want games that look good, coming from their box under their tv they only have to turn on without much fuss. nothing will replace that form factor, simplicity and acceptance.

The museum got pissed that people were just coming in for a minute then leaving, causing unwanted traffic. Players were angry because the museum staff got uppity with them. Jews were pissed because of course they were.
