Are blasters in Knights of the Old Republic supposed to suck as badly as they do? -

If you're going to use blasters, make sure you bring a lot of grenades. A blaster makes a perfect backup to your grenade-main because when you run out of grenades you can probably throw your blaster at the guy and confuse him long enough so you can get away to buy more grenades.

You know what lets just make this into a KOTOR/TOR/SW Games general thread

Anyways from my experience blasters seem a lot more effective in K2 than in K1 (same with unarmed combat which is suicide in 1 but an actually viable build in 2
Just to build up further from what we've both said, K2 has all the best gameplay builds to really develop from thanks to how the systems were reworked and how the companions could all become Jedi.
This meant that you would have a further development of a variety of combat builds in your party rather than giving everyone a vibroblade or a lightsaber like in the 1st game. So the handmaiden could turn into a literal whirlwind of fists, Mira could go around downing enemies with a pistol and grenades and you'd still sling force powers with them.
Basically, imagine this scene from Clone Wars

I got through KotOR 1 just by having Mission dual wield blasters with rapid shot and using my character to incapacitate everything. Can't deflect blasters when you're stunned/feared/choking. Everyone else got melee weapons except Canderous and HK. The Yavin DLC has some outstanding rifles and heavy weapons, the vanilla rifles and heavy weapons aren't worth your time.

EDIT: Also, the last boss can be cheesed. If you're immune to either critical hits or stunning and can survive the couple rounds it takes for him to blow through his tiny force point pool he's easy. He hits hard but it's manageable.

Turning my entire party into jedi was some of the most fun I've ever had in both KOTOR games, you can basically play the game on auto-pilot at this point, since your teammates will absolute decimate most enemies without much effort on your part.

Blaster combat just felt so underwhelming in comparison, I even gave Mandalore a vibroblade, I hated using ranged weapons so much.

I had a passing conversation, where I was told that ranged weapons were underpowered in the D&D ruleset that KOTOR was based off of. I'm no nerd so I can't back that up, but that's what I was told.

I got to the boss fight in KOTOR 1 and realised that I hadn't used any of my grenades throughout the game. It was a bit of a joke sticking him in place with the cryo grenades, then throwing everything I had at him.

Is it pretty much accepted that everyone should play as Jedi Jesus? I've never seen any other appearance used.

Yeah, KOTOR uses 3rd Edition which is why it is a total mess.

If they had used AD&D it would have been an infinitely better game despite already being pretty good.

Blaster Jedi in KotOR 2 are hilarious because you can get force powers that let you not just deflect blaster bolts without needing a saber or really, any weapon at all, but also redirect them back at the enemy. The attribute used to roll those deflection checks? Dexterity, since it counts as a defensive maneuver, same one used for ranged attack rolls. If you play as a male (and you fucking should since Disciple is a whiny bitch and useless, unlike Handmaiden who is a hot kuudere who can punch Sith Lords to death), you can add your Wisdom bonus to said defense rolls to deflect blaster shots after just a couple duels with her.
