I seem to be seeing a lot of threads lately where the OP no longer has an account and their name is struck through.

So far as I know, they didn't do anything to get banned, and often haven't posted in a long, long time.

Strikethrough in name = banned account.
You can't look at banned users' profiles because of Xenforo limitations IIRC, but the account is there.

I dunno, I can look at Waifu's profile, for example. It's just her name doesn't come up in search or with the @ thing.

Without examples there's no way to know for sure, but we've had a decent number of banned users over the years, so it's probably just that. Over time, there are bound to be more and more threads where the OP was banned at some point.
