So, we spend a lot of time talking about individuals and art and gross shit on the internet that we don't like, right? So how about a change of pace and we discuss artist we admire? There are a bunch of artist kiwis and I am sure they wouldn't mind sharing what or who inspires their work.

So basically discussion can be anything from just posting an image of a work you like. Though why not put a little effort into it and talk about what forsaken reason you like it? I am genuinely curious as to what you all like.

I also recommend chunking stuff together into a [ spoiler ] tag.

I just discovered this guy today. Jason Limon. His stuff is surreal, disturbing and even adorable as hell. Here is some of his work:

I also really like matt furies' art for some ineffable reason. I mean he is like some sort of autist, he created Pepe which exploded into a dumb meme. It is bizarre, and I guess kind of kitsch? I am sure some of you have seen some bastardization of his work.

Anyway, whom do you all like?

I'm a filthy weaboo so most of my favourite artists are from glorious nippon.

Ryo Hirata is my personal favourite though.
He doesn't really make himself known, and the only things he's been listed for are some games and one movie, but he has released a "how to draw" book so I might look into that.
His styles are usually mixed which is pretty cool.
But my personal favourite is his weird anime/pseudo-realism which I personally think is neat/

He did some very body horror focused art a fair few years back and they definitely haunt me. I love it.

I also learned through @Valiant he was murdered. That really upsets me.

Her artwork suffers from sameface but it's so well rendered.

Also all these artists are Polish. Wtf Poland? It's like they're brimming with talent and no dental care.

Another day, another artist to pimp out:

This is Naomi Chen's work. She was a prodigy at a young age, and inspired me to start drawing in the first place. Her dA gallery is mostly dead, and she deleted most of her works over the years that showed her amazing progress. Being the fan I am, I have nearly every work of hers from 2006 - 2010 in an imgur gallery.

Notable examples:
She made this when she was 18:

Steven Gammell is one of my favorite artists. He used to illustrate a book series called "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark". I used to read them at junior school and I remember the stories were pretty lame, the books would have been much scarier without the words. His drawings were too spooky for some kids, though, so some parents got mad and they ended up replacing his art. His art was too good for those books anyway.

I also like Thomas Cole, very epic, expansive paintings.

An artist who fascinates me is Louis Wain. He was very popular in the early 20th century for his humorous cat cartoons, but suffered from schizophrenia which ultimately resulted in his being committed to a mental hospital. He was a rather odd figure, quite possibly had a bit of the 'tism in there - basically all he did was pictures of cats, and he was never quite able to deal with the fact that the public got bored with his work.

What's particularly interesting is that a lot of his work was semi-abstract, influenced by textile patterns, and in many ways ahead of its time. This resulted in a myth that the abstract stuff was a sign of his declining sanity - largely due to a somewhat dubious psychiatrist falsely claiming after his death that the crazy shit was from his time in the nuthouse.

Anyway, here's a small selection.

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I've always really admired James Turrell. His medium is light, and I've always found that fascinating. He does a lot of land art and lighting installations, and his magnum-opus-in-progress is this giant crater out in the Arizona desert. In an industry that historically has rewarded pretentiousness and TOLD people what """art""" is, it takes a lot of balls to say "No, you're wrong, THIS is art too." and be able to intelligently defend that, as WELL as make a living off of it.

Artists I admire:

Winsor McCay
George Herriman
Lyonel Feininger (his fine art work isn't half bad either)
Harvey Kurtzman
Robert Crumb
Bob Armstrong
Basil Wolverton

Yes, most of them work in the medium of the comic book, but frankly, I'm of the opinion that that can be art if done by such skilled masters as these guys.

If you want to talk about the fine arts, for whatever reasons medieval paintings really do it for me. Hieronymus Bosch in particular - his religious stuff is incredible to look at.

I've got a few I really like. Most of them do a lot of highly detailed, historical/alternate-historical/speculative-fiction stuff, which I'm kind of a sperg for.
