I only draw occasionally and I'm not really great at it, but I've been wanting a tablet just to learn how to use one. I'm also on a very tight budget, but I have an untouched card that could probably stand one small purchase.

Could any of you arty-types recommend a relatively cheap, decent graphics tablet for a beginner?

The tablet I use is a wacom bamboo tablet mte-450. It's a good six years old and has been holding up very well after being beat up and traveling across the country back and forth. This model is the most basic in the bamboo line from what I gather and the cheapest, being only $70 when I got it but it's gone down in price the last time I checked.

Here are the specifications:
Product Dimensions: 250 x 251 x 70 cm ; 862 g
Active area: 147x93 mm
Resolution: 2540 lpi
4 configurable short buttons
Stylus (pen) with two buttons and rubber in the top part
Sensitive buttons to the touch for rotate/zoom
USB connection
I hope that helps!

I just got one of the 9x12's. The dimensions you see for drawing tablets are for the active drawing surface only. The actual form factor is 14x15. $92, but you can get ones a lot cheaper if you don't want such a huge beast of a tablet.
Advantages: A lot cheaper than wacom tablets. Just about as accurate and responsive.
Disadvantage: The drivers aren't as good. Doesn't play well with GIMP*. Unlike Wacom tablets, the pen requires a AAA battery.

I just got the tablet today, so I'm still getting used to it. It works super well in Krita, which I just downloaded because of the GIMP issues.

*The GIMP issue is apparently because the program doesn't work well with non wacom drivers. It's more of a GIMP problem than a tablet problem. I can either have it work decently without pressure sensitivity or almost a full second of lag with.

The Bamboo Fun was my first ever tablet, and it was great. It was relatively cheap and very easy to install and handle. It lasted years, and even towards the end when the wires were coming out from the top, it still worked. Definitely check out other Bamboo tablets, they cost very little and are worth every penny.

I've had my rinky-dink little wacom for nearly eight years now and the wire connection just started going on me. They don't make the same model that I have anymore but I would agree with anyone suggesting the small bamboo.
I actually have to buy a new, larger one for school now and I'm going to be sad to retire this one. (:_(

I don't want to start a new thread so I'll just necro this one. Do you guys have any art tablets you like that you can recommend that work well with windows 10?
All the search results I'm finding are stupidly expensive for a hobby (for me at least) or suspiciously cheap. Ideally, I'd like to keep the price around ~$150 ($200 max.). If that's too low for anything worthwhile I'll stick to paper.

Do you mean tablet like a drawing tablet or a tablet pc? Supposedly Surface Pros are ok. For drawing tablet a cheap huion will do you just fine.

huion makes some decent quality tablets for their prices. you can get a screenless tablet for like 40 to 60 bucks with a 10x6 workspace.
This is what I ended up doing. I got the HS611 for $80. It's been working great so far. It does feel a little flimsy but this is my first one so it's normal for all I know. Either way, I expected to have to pay more so I'm happy.

As mentioned already Huion makes good, cheap tablets. Though the last tablet I had from them (forgot its model number) the pen detection distance was a bit too small to comfortably use. The "new" Wacom Intuos is also an inexpensive option with a smaller size - which is gonna be a pro or a con depending on what you want, I got it specifically because it's more compact.

Any LED or non-screen graphic tablets do certainly works. Though, as long you actually know how to keep it wisely without trying to damage it.
