Artists on KF- what do you hate in other people's art? -

If you are someone who has a lot of experience with art, there is a chance there are some things you may see in other people's works that you strongly dislike.

To people with no art experience, a very basic level of skill can be amazing. For example, Mr. Doodle on Instagram. He does squiggles and gets millions of followers for it. Another example: paint pouring. Just pouring paint on a canvas (sometimes with no planning at all) amazes some people apparently.

With the whole drama around CreepShow art, some people have been criticizing her work, saying it was never good to begin with. This is what made me want to ask this question.

Basically asking about what's popular in art/ what people think takes a lot of time, creativity, or talent but really doesn't.

The scratchy tumblr style. You know the one - lines are all over the place, sloppy colouring, barely readable handwriting and atrocious colour theory. I see a lot of people on twitter and tumblr (*cough* *cough* puppychan) who do this and get hordes of followers who think that they've worked hard for their art when what they're doing is basically beginner-tier stuff.

I dislike it when people don’t experiment and try to do more things beyond their comfort zone. Nobody becomes great at something by sticking with what they know. It’s good to try new experiences in art and take advice from others or else you will never become a better artist.
I agree. Also, I think accepting criticism on your art is very important. You don't have to change everything someone dislikes about your art, but it's important to listen to the opinions of other artists especially. Even if you don't want to change at all, it's good to know how you are viewed.

Yeah, the tumblr style is so painful to see. It's like artistic communism or something. Everyone has to do the same shit on those websites or they never get noticed.

Can you show an example?
I don't do digital art so smudge shading to me is probably a different thing
He's referring to the dreaded burn/dodge tool shading technique.

I knew a guy once who literally only painted clouds. He COULD paint other things because I saw him do it once... but he just painted clouds.

ohhh yeah that looks horrible. It looks like dirt lmao. Also, does he have a front butt?
Agreed. What an ass backwards way to draw.

So I should preface this with two things: One, I actually stopped being an "artist" a couple of years ago. I found that I wasn't making any real improvements, along with the reasons and examples I'm about to show, that partially led to me ultimately giving it all up.

So being like any girl who likes weeb shit, you end developing your own sort of "weeb style". Although I tried to never say I had a "style" because I wasn't good at any of the basics one should have down to really even consider themselves as "artist". I always tried to push myself, to go further than an anime-inspired style, to make my anatomy look better, proportions, you name it. I remember being active on DeviantArt and trying to gather any sense of a "following" to my art page and what I did. I saw people who were much younger, much less skilled than myself, yet people gave them all the attention I ever could've dreamed of.

The biggest annoyance in the "art" world that I see now, is this bullshit, and I honestly don't know if I have a valid thinking behind this or if I'm just being nit-picky. So please share your thoughts on this too.

But am I the only one who looks at garbage like this and goes "Wow, I'm glad you were able to pump out yet another generic anime picture with thick lines and pastel colors.... again."
Because this is seriously some of the biggests hits that I'll see these days. If it's "kawaii", pastel, and anime enough people eat it the fuck up despite it looking like carbon copies of the other pieces that get posted anyway. Sometimes they'll be ballsy and put a background, but most of the time there either isn't one, or it's one of the most simple backgrounds one could think of. Flat colors, flat texturing, little to no shading because most of the time the colors are so similar they're bleeding into one another, and you can't fucking tell what's going on (Like in the first picture where it's all blue. Your eyes can't focus on any point of it except on the girl, because the girl's skin is literally the only hint of contrast we get against all the other shades of blue.)

Any thoughts on this crap?

I dislike when artists incorporate their own burnout or depression in the form of "irony". Not irony, the reversal of expectation, but "irony", where the result is ugly, aggravating or low-effort, but it's sarcastic, so if you don't like it that makes you the dummy. Just take a break instead of dumping more crap on the Internet.

Saturating the image with distracting details strikes me as insecurity on the part of the artist. You've got to be comfortable with the basic form of your work and know when to stop.

Honestly it is annoying that this is like the only type of stuff that really gets attention. It makes me wonder, are people only looking for something bland and simple for lock screen wallpapers pr profile photos? It must be something like that
