Assassin's Creed Valhalla - WE WUZ VIKANGS

The game just whines at you if you kill a civilian telling you "You will desynch if you kill civilians!".

this always bothered me so I just want to point out that this makes no fucking sense. The animus lets you relive the MEMORIES of your ancestors through DNA, right? so, how can you possibly desynch? If you run into the village and start throwing haymakers at children, that's because your viking ancestor must've thrown fists at some fucking british children. that's how a fucking memory works.

I know it's a contrived way to make a game over setting, but it always bothered the shit out of me that they tried to have it both ways. "This machine replays memories but if you play the game in a way we don't like we're kicking you out, even though as a memory that shouldn't be possible to happen."

It's not replaying a memory, it's reliving it. The idea is that it's reading the genetic imprint of your ancestors memories and recreating the specific memories in VR while allowing the user to control their ancestors actions. That's the plot in AC2. They popped Desmond in the Animus so he could learn how to be an assassin quickly and safely. You're doing the work, but it's still a game. It's not a perfect recreation, just a simulation of the actual events. Your ancestor never killed some random civilian, but you have the ability to in the simulation. You can deviate in the specifics, but the general must remain the same.

I remember really liking the whole present day plot in the AC. I don't know if was something that was shown off before the games release but I didn't know about it, so when they bring you out of the animus into the present day I was a bit shocked. I spent a lot of time fucking around in that room trying to find all the secrets.

Now I feel like the present day plot is really dragging the the series down.

are you sure? i thought the entire deal with Desmond learning that way is they specifically say it's because of muscle MEMORY, not that he's running around in VR, but because his body is reliving that memory he passively learns how to do the shit. I'm pretty fuckin' sure they explicitly say that?

Muscle memory that's learned through the VR. Replay the first AC and they explain that it's an interactive simulation of the memory, not the memory by itself. He picks up the muscle memory through interaction, and his body responds because it's bleeding over from the simulation into himself. The part you're missing is, again, that it's a VR-like simulation, not a simple replay.

I'm pretty averse to remakes most of the time, but I think a remake of the first game would be justified. It's an interesting setting that deserves to be expanded, and the gameplay is janky as fuck despite only being 13 years old.

Jesus Christ this series has only been around 13 years.

24 games in 13 years, including phone, portable, spin offs, etc.

Never let it be said that Ubisoft doesn’t know how to milk a franchise to death.

I honestly like the real-world metaplot they had going on from 1-3, mostly because it makes sense and has an actual end-goal for both sides. But after that they very quickly began to lose it, Black Flag being a very good tie-in but Rogue not really making much sense, with Unity having it be a sidenote and I have no idea what Syndicate did there. But then Origins and Odyssey starting making not a single bit of sense with what they were going for. Especially since Origins directly contradicted the lore surrounding the Armor of Brutus in Brotherhood, where Brutus only decided to knife his best friend in the back a few times after receiving Precursor visions.

Also, we have Juno and Minerva as known, named Precursors, you have a guy who looks like either Oranos or Poseidon showing up at the end of Revelations to tell Desmond something, so... I always thought it would be a neat little twist if the Father of Understanding the Templars paid homage to was the Precursor Jupiter. And no, I'm not calling them the Isu because that's a dumb-fuck name.

I just want to know if Juno and Minerva are evil. Why did Lucy have to die? Oh noes!!! She's a templar!!!!!1111oneone!!!

But like.....to just fridge her like that was gay. (And yes Kristen Bell was upset at her character being written out so you know it wasn't her idea. They pulled a Black Widow)

I don't mind her being a Templar, because Desmond's dad is such an ass I could believe it. They just didn't set it up enough. Anyways, last I played these games Juno was very clearly bad and Minerva was good. Has that changed?

To be fair, Assassins tend to switch sides pretty frequently, since we had Rogue and then the stereotypical filthy Frog in Unity who teamkilled the council because he wanted to go on a killing spree (granted, that was one hell of a boss battle IMO since it was one of the most purely vicious fights I've seen in vidya both in terms of emotion and combat). It isn't exactly like an order of assassins lends itself to any stability, especially because they have a tendency to fuck up, overreach, and get smacked down by a bigass army of Templar proxies every couple hundred years, so I don't doubt Lucy got disillusioned with the Assassins and thought the Templar plan was a better shot instead of her just being an evil Templar from the start. And yes, Juno is bad and wants to take over mankind, and IIRC Minverva just wants her kind to fade away since its our planet now, not theirs.

Playing through the first AC for the first time and am at the penultimate sequence... So far Im enjoying the story atmosphere and setting but the gameplay constantly alternates between fun and Jank... The side content is very bare bones but aside from the flag collecting and killing the 60 templar agents I like how it feels like your setting up an assasination. The investigations are to get more info about the target, The tower climbing is so you can scout out the area the hit will take place in, and saving the citizens grants you either priests which you can use to blend in and get into certain areas without parkour or combat and vigilantes which can either stall pursuing guards or catch fleeing targets so you can knife em... Also the game is giving me a very strong urge to kill the poor and mentally disabled

fun fact, the fucking flag collecting came from the console version for achievements, back then it didn't even do anything on pc.
but yeah, as a first entry it's definitely rough around the edges, but it's easy to see how it could spawn sequels. if you haven't played ac2 yet, it definitely improves in some aspects (and climbing around in renaissance italy is a bit more fun than middle eastern mudhuts).

Posted in another thread but more appropriate here:

I've been playing Assassin's Creed odyssey, and while it's a perfectly fine game and enjoyable - plus i love history - the entire thing is very derivative of Witcher 3 and Shadow of Mordor games. Even the soundtrack is reminiscent of Witcher 3.

And there's the mercenary system, which is copied wholesale of the Nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor but more broken and irritating Let me tell you the tale of Talos Stone fist, the first mercenary and his broken AI.

So Talos spawns and he hovers around and follows you at a distance, homing in when you do anything interesting. It became extremely annoying to do quests as he was higher level and would kill me, and he would hover around quest areas making them annoying to do.

I go to the nearby island of Ithaca - the ancient home of the greatest Greek mortal hero, Odysseus/Ullysses.

Talos doesn't know how to combat this. I can see from the eagle mechanic he is just hovering around the edge of the last island and doesn't know how to cross. I explore Ithaca; there isn't much there, but it's cool to see Odysseus' palace ruins i guess.

So as i return to the main island, something clicks in Talos' dumb as shit AI and he begins running over and swimming to Ithaca. This allows me to begin filling him with arrows shoreside. At this point the AI breaks completely and he just sits like a moron in the water and i just cheesw him off.

The voice acting in this game is fucking atrocious and the less said about the modern day plot the better. I couldn't give a fuck about this Layla bitch.

It's a fine enough game, certainly more interesting quests and things to do than Origins. But i've played it all before. Valhalla looks intriguing, i'll get it when it lowers in price.

Also been playing the AC2 remaster and it still holds up though the gameplay doesn't. Lost track of how many times ezio wants to jump off something to his death.

It was supposed to be a secret reveal and they never showed it but a journo(I think) leaked it shortly before release and Ubisoft was pissed. Could have been a print mag getting out early, possibly Edge.

I played through Unity recently and holy fuck is it a chore to play through. Paris look amazing but they don't do anything with the french revolution setting. It is the opposite of AC3 issues, where you took part in everything with the american revolution. Here, they do fuck all. Also, fuck the coop missions.
I am also playing through black flag again and that game still holds up, even if it become sammy after a while.
