I played through Unity recently and holy fuck is it a chore to play through. Paris look amazing but they don't do anything with the french revolution setting. It is the opposite of AC3 issues, where you took part in everything with the american revolution. Here, they do fuck all. Also, fuck the coop missions.
I am also playing through black flag again and that game still holds up, even if it become sammy after a while.
I agree with everything except the co op. I enjoyed that, honestly. Became a contest between my friends on who could kill the most the quickest and stealthiest. It was like playing Tenchu Z again.

Rogue was good because the Templars actually looked fucking reasonable in that. Can't have that anymore, though.

Rogue reused assets, lacked soul & had the most predictable writing. The only reason anyone should play Rogue is the ship combat (improved over Black Flag). Caring about being an antihero in a series this superficial is retarded.

There are 4 games in this series worth experiencing: AC1, Brotherhood (for their historical relevancy more than anything else), Black Flag & Origins. Origins has mmo design, with all the consequences that entails for a single player game. Its visuals are mesmerizing and progression is handled better; essentially a better Odyssey, although that's not saying much.

You completely missed the point of what I was saying. The Templars weren't cartoonish villains and that was a good thing, they had their own goals to preserving humanity that differed from the Assassins and even the Assassins were fallible with their blunders. I didn't care about being an anti-hero, neither side were heroic in that game. What I liked was that the Templars actually had valid reasons for doing what they did. That was leagues above better than the shit they're spewing now.

I liked Rogue. Yeah, it reused assets and it was short. The revenge story was fun and I enjoyed being able to goof around snow hells while assassinating people. Shay was also one of the better protagonists.

As for Origins? I liked Origins a lot but it should have been something stand alone. I just can't accept it as an AC game because it's just such a wild departure from the series with its gameplay mechanics. It was a great story and fun to play but just didn't seem to "fit" with the franchise for me. Then again, I thought the soft eventual inclusion of RPG mechanics into the AC franchise was stupid to begin with and just there to add grind (that you can pay to lessen) to frustrate the player.

Black Flag reused assets from 3. Brotherhood reused assets from 2. Odyssey reused assets from Origins. I haven't played it, but I'm sure Valhalla has some reused assets. It's a yearly franchise, if someone hates reused assets they shouldn't be playing the series (well, and because the series has shamelessly reused the "climb tower, reveal map" loop for years now).

Rogue reused assets, but didn't lack soul, not since it was a rushed shoehorn title, which was still pretty good.
Ship combat was improved? I mean it did have some different mechanics, but it was unbalanced as hell.
AC1 is dull and borring besides the intro and the ending. The story is okay, has some good dialogue, especially with Al Mualim, but the gameplay is so repetitive it's a chore to play it midway.
Brotherhood was fine, Black Flag was great.
Origins is overrated. It's literally a shorter Odyssey with an even dumber skill system and in between the two or three really, really good story parts, especially the one with Caesar, it's a fucking mmo slog, like you say.
I'd say to get a good AC expereince is to play the Ezio Trilogy, including AC1 if you can spare 10 hours for it. And the Kenway saga, maybe even play it in historic sequence starting with BF, then Rogue, then III.
I hear Unity has good gameplay, never played it though.
The rest are MMORPG clusterfests.

That's on me, I wasn't specific enough. I mainly meant the reused New York City, where they dotted some collectibles around the map and called it a day. It's too transparent in its laziness.
You had a lot more to do in mainline titles, your digs were pathetic in Rogue as well, let's not mention Shay's combat animations.

It lacked soul because the world felt empty, the ship overworld was constrictive and limited in scope, yet still dotted with markers. Brotherhood WAS fine, it really doesn't hold up when you have the likes of Horizon: Zero Dawn. Always had a soft spot for Revelations, even with the tacked on tower defense, portal ripoff & overkill bombs. I'm a sucker for Turkish architecture.

Unity has good gameplay when it works. It's a shame, I don't think the parkouring has ever been topped. You're stuck with lacking gameplay loops in a new engine, where they've managed to replicate and worsen flaws from previous entries, it's the equivalent of squeezing your windpipe & occasionally cutting the airflow off entirely.

I mean, most, if not all AC worlds are pretty empty. Now that you mention it though, in Rogue you literally hear the same looping dialogue between soldiers everywhere about the 7 years war going on and shit. Shit is comically low quality. But I still stand with it having been no less of a fun game than Black Flag. I liked the story too, even though it was way too short and rushed through itself mid way. I'd wager most people's problem was that good old Ubisoft charged for it too much, by which I can agree that whatever Rogue is, it is definitely half the game than any other Assassin Creed game is, except maybe 1, and should be half the price too.
I used to hate Revelations because it bugged the shit out on me the first time I played it. SOmething to do with AC3's shitty engine I think. But having played it again a couple of times, it's alright actually. It's basically Brotherhood with some new gimmics. Story sucked though, big maybe besides the Altair parts. Really wished they did more with Ezio's ending.
I'd also mention AC Liberation with the black chick. It was also buggy as fuck when I played it, but I actually liked it. Story didn't really go anywhere, but the gameplay was interesting with the different outfits for social stealth.

So why did they decide to make 3 games that have nothing to do with the Assassins? What's the point of these having the Asscred name besides brand recognition? I mean i looked up a sypnosis of the story of the preceding ones and the alien or whatever you meet at the end of the game practically say "fuck this narrative we had, what's really necessary is a balance between the Assassins and Templars andyou Female chosen one will establish it"

they want to make history games, but need to use ac as a crutch because it sells

But that's brand recognition as i mentioned it? So the only other reason is Ubisoft is retarded?
Another question: where in the series would be a good cut off point?

It sucks, because as far as hack-and-slash RPGs go Valhalla is actually pretty fun. Its just terrible as a game about being a sneaky assassin.

I would say AC3, Black Flag, Syndicate, Odyssey and 2. Mainly because Ubisoft tried to change the formula somewhat with the Assassin's Creed gameplay loop. I say 2 because it was the start of something revolutionary for Ubisoft.

Black Flag has pirates and ship combat. 3 has the setting being in the American Revolution. Syndicate for the twin protagonists and London setting coupled with taking notes from GTA. Odyssey with improving on everything Origins brought to the table.

Even a better question is why the hell did they decide to make three solely single player MMORPGs?
Answer is that it sells for some stupid reason and Ubisoft likes money more than making consistently good products.

I'm in the minority that legitimately enjoyed Syndicate though it was the start of all that RPG nonsense.

I don't even consider Black Flag an AC game really, it's just an evolved Sid Meier's Pirates game to me. Wasn't Ubisoft working on a game that was literally just the ship portion of Black Flag but under some new franchise?

I've played all the AC games up to Origins (where I kind of noped out of the franchise, not that Origins wasn't a cool game in its own right, but it wasn't an AC game, and I didn't like the grindy RPG mechanics that is now a staple of AC), and the Ezio Trilogy is still my favorite.

I may be talking out of my ass here, but there used to be a Pirates of the Caribean game called Armada of the Damned that had the same ship sailing shtick that Black Flag had. The PotC game was eventually canceled, but word used to be that Ubisoft bought out the tech know-how to make the sailing how it was in PotC and used it for Black Flag.
And yeah, now they're making that Skull and Bones game with just the sailing, but it's been rebooted a number of times and who knows what will it have in it or not anymore.
Also about the last three AC RPGs, Ubisoft could have easily created a new IP, called it Tales of Ancients or whatever, and just kept the entire lore in the AC universe. But that shit would require to risk marketing and do innovation. Ubisoft ain't about that.
