The July elections last month created a flood of 'independents' and 'write-in' candidates in the Chamber of Deputies of Australatina as well as portions of the Senate. This is just a symptom to what's truly going on; the caciques and caudillos, most former revolutionaries, have accrued enough power to effectively dictate policy to the young and weak democracy.

This wasn't an overnight thing; a good proportion of deputies, ministers, and senators were either directly voted among the oligarchs or in their pocket from the beginning. They had one of the highest totals in 2016, only beaten out by a Derecha Republicana-Anglican Union coalition. It just took the 2017 Famine that rocked the nation due to a rapidly fluctuating economy to give these strongmen a chance. Simple bribery went a long way into this journey of directly controlling the nation's legislation.

Deciding to consolidate this power, these strongmen and oligarchs decided to resurrect KOFO (or OFOK as it was known by the Spanish speaking members) as a political party. KOFO was an anti-communist cell that started originally from the Ciscadio population before rapidly gaining cross-ethnic popularity as the old regime continued to mismanage the country and oppress its people. Their goals were vague, and it was really just removing the Partida Obrero Maoista (POM) from power.

With this in mind, three particularly strong contenders have stepped forward:

The front man at the moment is former Minister of Industry d'Acero. Jose d'Acero (@Broseph Stalin ) is one of the most powerful caciques in the north of the country and has cross ethnic line support. He was Minister of Industry before resigning in disgust over the poor handling of the famine, which disproportionately affected his neck of the woods. He is popular among the Ciscadios due to his ardent defense of bilingualism and his demands for improved conditions in the poorest region in the already destitute country. He has allegedly been connected to a series of politically motivated killings of former Maoista loyalists, but there isn't much proof. A militant Rothbardian, his leadership would tilt KOFO towards a libertarian, near Anarcho-Capitalist party.

Another contender for the leadership is Jaima Alfaro (@Jaimas ). Alfaro is a fairly eloquent, if longwinded revolutionary and is the most intellectual among the three. He is an admirer of the Porfiriato period of Mexico as well as Huey Long's Share Our Wealth program of the US, believing that many of the ills of Australatina were due to an inept bureaucracy, poor government structures, and a desire for ideological purity that ran against how progress and prosperity is actually attained. He is running a far more nationalist and populist campaign, a near opposite to d'Acero's minimalist approach. He has on occasion been compared to Benito Mussolini or Adolf Hitler by partisans, which has made the caudillo laugh in amusement.

The last, and strangest, candidate is Florencio Azarola (@flossman ). He is unlike the other members of KOFO in that he isn't an established revolutionary or leader. He was just a simple citizen who decided to fight against Las Papas when his regime could not keep control over the people any longer. He became known during Operation Bolivar during the taking of Santa Judas. He has no real stances or opinions, making him a possible dark horse. He in fact has only one pledge if he should become President or Premier; he pledges to detonate a nuclear device to create a radioactive pit in the middle of nowhere. From there he will make it his goal to extradite former dictator Delici back to Australatina so he can personally throw him into said pit via helicopter. This odd pledge has earned him a cult following among the younger voters.

The oligarchs and strongmen are plotting what to do with their spoils, and they convene at a series of bars to sound out which man is their man.

And the race is off with a strong lead for Azarola. It seems that his relative lack of influence makes him a popular pick among the jefes. He also seems to be skyrocketing due to his likely stance as a compromise candidate. His sole pledge of the "nuke pit helicopter ride" also seems to be popular among the newly forming party itself; anger against Delici's mismanagement is at an all-time high.

Our nation cannot stand to allow El Primero's corruption to operate unopposed any longer. We are seeing a return on our investment for less than one thirtieth of our natural resources. It's been decades since El Primero and his elite took control of this land, and, consumed by greed, trampled over the rights of the great people of it. The citizens demand freedom, and will not forget all the times that El Primero's regime has trampled us, and forced its own military to turn their arms against their countrymen.

El Primero must be brought in for his crimes. We must bring him to justice and send his followers a message, but simply executing him and throwing him from a helicopter would be too quick and too merciful. He deserves to be forced to watch as this country builds a better future without him and his psychotic, totalitarian policies. Already the few sane members of El Primero's former staff have defected to our side and are seeing the wisdom in our platform.

We will rebuild this country, brick by brick if we have to, and we're in the process of negotiating for foreign investment in our land for the first time. If successful, we will be well on our way towards modernizing Australatina's economy and putting an end to the financial blight that was El Primero's tariffs against first-world nations.

We've all felt the sting of what El Primero's regime has done to our families. We've all lost loved ones due to this contemptible monster. We must never forget what El Primero has done to our people. We finally in a position where victory is within our grasp, and once again, our most cherished nation will flourish. The results were initially surprising, but it ultimately made sense as to why he won. d'Acero and Alfaro both represent the more extreme elements of the resistance group back in their heyday, while Azarola hasn't alienated as many due to not taking stances. d'Acero for instance often would heckle cold crowds by mocking them for demanding what he called hand-outs. Rumors of his supporters harrassing and even attacking dissidents are also not unheard of. His ties to honor killings also turned off some of those who wanted to break the party from its past as a freedom fighting cell.

Alfaro on the other had was seen by Federalistas and those hoping for a balance of power as too much of a Centralist or a bit of a throwback to the old days of having a strongman running a country. A braver opponent would remark that "we did not just fight to liberate our country by electing a knock-off Pinochet", referring to some of the more bombastic cues in Alfaro's many speeches. He ultimately did better than d'Acero, but this may be due to the strong populist streak developing among the Austrolatine community as the nation still struggles to find its feet in a new capitalist world.

Critics call the leadership election a sham; it was caudillos and caciques combining their influence and resources to select a small-time public servant. To them, Azarola will just be a puppet for the new classes of oligarchs running rampant in the country. But time will tell; few after all remember that Vladimir Putin at the very beginning of his time as Russia's new "tsar" was seen in a similar light; a tool of Yeltsin or of the Oligarchs. Perhaps Azarola will be his own man, and go on to greater things... perhaps.

Not that you chose me, but for the entire voting turnout for a country that, until now, has been in the hands of cruel politicians with no regard for their citizens. To borrow from our brothers and sisters of the United States of America I offer these words:

They fought to throw off the shackles of their oppressors as we do now. The struggle is far from over, but together we will take our first step into the unknown: freedom. Many of you have never known it, living in fear, but I promise you that the unknown is not to be dreaded or shied away from.

We march out of the darkness and into the light as one people. We shall also enjoy the light of the crater that Phillip Vincent Haskins-Delici, living in exile under the name "Isabel Rosa Araujo," will make as he is tossed into it for his unforgivable war crimes.
